10, Ninth, The Story of the Birth of the Bhikshu Holder of Wisdom 10, Ninth, The Story of the Birth of the Bhikshu Holder of Wisdom Furthermore, it is said that at one time he benefited sentient beings in the form of a Shravaka. How did he do that? In the Sutra of the Holy Play of Bliss and Emptiness, the Venerable Subhuti asked the Bhagavan: "Venerable One, the young Licchavi, who is pleasing to see by all in the world, whoever sees him, their minds are exceedingly delighted, satisfied, and joyful. Even the six teachers of the common heretics, upon seeing him, become jealous and revile him. What is the cause? What is the reason? For the sake of benefiting all sentient beings, please explain, O Bhagavan." Then the Bhagavan said: "Subhuti, well asked, well asked. I will explain the cause and reason in detail, listen carefully. In the distant past, in the world, there was a perfectly enlightened Buddha named Light Protector, who lived and resided, teaching the Dharma. There was also a Venerable One named Holder of Wisdom, who became his attendant. He was an Arhat, having cast off his burden, exhausted his defilements, attained his own goal, and was without afflictions. He became the close attendant of the Tathagata. Then, by the power of the Buddha, one morning, taking his Dharma robes and bowl, he went for alms, facing the country of Magadha, and descended to the lowlands of the village. Then, a heretical king named Poison Arrow, at the crossroads where all paths converged, in the lowlands of the village, erected many large gates at each path, and entrusted many weapons to six people, commanding them with these words: 'Six executioners, whether it be father or mother, anyone who is not of your own kind, kill them without rest.' Then the six people killed many people, horses, cattle, birds, and everything that appeared there, and the whole place was filled with a mess of flesh and blood, intestines, and bones. At that time, the Bhikshu Holder of Wisdom went there, and the six executioners also ran to the Bodhisattva. Having run there, they raised their weapons and shouted 'Ha Ha,' and the Bodhisattva flew into the sky.

It became like this. Then, the six executioners also kept watching the Bodhisattva who was walking in the sky. Making all kinds of noises, they would definitely commit harmful acts. Then, the biggest of them also said these words to the Bodhisattva: Alas! You fly in the sky without hindrance like a bird. Are you a god, a dragon, or a Brahma, a demon? Whoever you are, please come down here! Do not break the strict royal law, please grant (ཤོ་གམ་, Sanskrit: śokam, Roman transliteration: śoka, literal Chinese meaning: sorrow)! The Dharma robes (ཆོས་གོས) are beautifully adorned on your body. You have a round head, bare feet, and lotus-like eyes. The fragrance of discipline spreads throughout the three thousand worlds. Do not break the strict royal law, please grant (ཤོ་གམ་, Sanskrit: śokam, Roman transliteration: śoka, literal Chinese meaning: sorrow)! You hold a begging bowl, a staff, and scriptures in your hands. You are peaceful and smiling, looking straight ahead. The white hair between your eyebrows curls to the right like a conch shell. Do not break the strict royal law, please grant (ཤོ་གམ་, Sanskrit: śokam, Roman transliteration: śoka, literal Chinese meaning: sorrow)! You have a complexion like refined gold. Your teeth are white and even, totaling forty. Both palms of your hands have a thousand-petaled lotus. Do not break the strict royal law, please grant (ཤོ་གམ་, Sanskrit: śokam, Roman transliteration: śoka, literal Chinese meaning: sorrow)! On the soles of your feet are Dharma wheels with outlines and a thousand spokes. All your fingers are adorned with vajra nets. You have a slender and wide tongue, and you speak with the voice of Brahma. Do not break the strict royal law, please grant (ཤོ་གམ་, Sanskrit: śokam, Roman transliteration: śoka, literal Chinese meaning: sorrow)! Your earrings and headdress hang down. Your cheeks are beautiful, and your shoulders are like those of a deer king. You are different from others, what is your identity? Do not break the strict royal law, please grant (ཤོ་གམ་, Sanskrit: śokam, Roman transliteration: śoka, literal Chinese meaning: sorrow)! If this law is not strictly enforced, then the landowner king will execute us all with a huge poisoned arrow. Do not break the strict royal law, please grant (ཤོ་གམ་, Sanskrit: śokam, Roman transliteration: śoka, literal Chinese meaning: sorrow)! Then, a strong compassion arose in the Bodhisattva's mind, and he said these words to them: I am not a god, a dragon, or a Brahma. I am the true noble one, the holder of wisdom. With the rain of Dharma of the perfection of giving, I grant you the (śokam, Sanskrit: śokam, Roman transliteration: śoka, literal Chinese meaning: sorrow) without stinginess! Destroying all faults, creating the basis for merit. Extremely rare to find, immaculate and pure. With the rain of Dharma of the perfection of discipline, I grant you the (śokam, Sanskrit: śokam, Roman transliteration: śoka, literal Chinese meaning: sorrow) without pride! Eliminating the darkness of intense anger like snake venom. Causing harm to me is like precious gold. With the rain of Dharma of the perfection of patience, I grant you the (śokam, Sanskrit: śokam, Roman transliteration: śoka, literal Chinese meaning: sorrow) without anger!
