K K Digitized by Google Digitized by Google APPENDIX. 251 No. III. Trtmslaiians of eertam Hieroghfphie$, ufkieh kitkerto harm been eaUed (ikomgh erromemuhf) the Zddmei of Dendera in Effifpt. In consequence of llie extraordinary high andquity asidgned by some of tiie French writers to those hieroglyphic sculpture!^ called Zodiacs, found in the temple of Dendera, or Tentyra, vi Egypt, I was induced some years ago to examine them minutely, and found l9iat, so far from their being Zodiacs, as represented, or called, they were nothing more nor less than the Roman Calendar fer the year 708 of Rome, translated into hieroglyphics. This circumstance gave me hopes that re-translating them ^ouM be use- ftd in developing the Egyptian method of hieroglyphics, in repre- s^iting things by their supposed images, particularly irach articles as are generally inserted in calendars, wMch might ultimately lead U> a more extensive knowledge of the siibject. The circumstance which appears to have deceived the French writers into an idea of their being zodiacs, and of an antiquity of 15,000 years or more, is smiply this. . They fotind that they con- tained figures of the constellations, that is, outlines without stars ; and that some of these figures wer^ agdn repeated or represented at about the distance of six sigiis froni the original ones of the same name. The former figures they took for the constellfttions ; but the latter they assumed ta be the sighs', winch therefore would Inquire a space of time equal to 15,000 years to bring them into the positions they stand in at present; Thus they found that the constdllition Aquarius, or the figure representing eith^ it or the^ sign Aquarius, was in its proper place between Capricorn and Pisces.
