Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness Homage to Manjushri Kumara! Whether abiding or arising and ceasing, existing or not existing, inferior or equal, or having distinctions, it is not by the power of the language of the Buddha or the Lord of the World, but by the power of true realization. No-self, not no-self, self, and not not-self cannot be expressed. What is expressed is the same as nirvana. The nature of all things is emptiness. Because the nature of all phenomena, whether the collection of causes and conditions, or individually, does not exist in any thing, therefore it is emptiness. Because it exists, the existent does not arise; because it does not exist, the non-existent does not arise. Because the dharmas are inconsistent, therefore it is neither existent nor non-existent. Without arising, there is no abiding or ceasing. That which has arisen is not created, and that which has not arisen is not created. That which is arising, whether arisen or not arisen, is not created. Because there is a result, there is a cause with a result, which is the same as without a cause, and without is also the same, which is the same as without a cause. If it is neither existent nor non-existent, then it is contradictory and not reasonable in the three times. Without one, there is no many; without many, there is no one. Therefore, the phenomena of dependent arising have no characteristics. The twelve links of dependent arising, which are the fruit of suffering, are not produced. It is not reasonable for one mind, nor is it reasonable for many minds. Neither permanent nor impermanent, neither self nor no-self, neither pure nor impure, neither happiness nor suffering, therefore there are no inversions. Because these are not, the ignorance and action that arise from the four inversions do not exist. Without these, action will not arise, and the rest are the same. Ignorance and action do not arise without cause, and without these, action will not arise, because they are interdependent, so these two are not truly self-existent. If something is not truly self-existent in nature, how can it produce other things? Therefore, that which is produced by other things, other conditions are not creators. The father is not the son, and the son is not the father, the two are not unrelated, and the two are not simultaneous, and the twelve links are the same. Just as the suffering and happiness that depend on the objects of dreams and their objects do not exist, then what does it depend on? What is dependent arising? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And these also do not exist. If all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, then inferiority, equality, superiority, and various distinctions cannot be established, nor can they manifest from causes. If inherent existence were established, it would contradict dependent origination. If things exist without dependence, how could inherent existence not exist? For existence and non-existence, and the self and other of non-existence, how could there be a change of non-existence? Therefore, self, other, and non-existence are all inverted. If things are empty, then there will be no cessation and no arising. For that which is empty of inherent existence, what ceases and what arises? Existence and non-existence cannot exist simultaneously. If non-existence does not exist, then existence does not exist. Existence will become non-existence, and if non-existence does not exist, existence will not exist. Without existence, there is no non-existence. Neither self-arisen nor other-arisen. Therefore, if non-existence does not exist, then existence does not exist; if non-existence exists, then existence exists. If it exists, then it is permanent; if it does not exist, then it is necessarily annihilation. Because of the fault of permanence, these do not exist, because giving rise to causes, things will cease. As before, these cannot be established, and it will also fall into the fault of permanence and annihilation. In order to show arising and ceasing, the Buddha taught the path, not for emptiness. These contradict each other, due to inverted views. If arising and ceasing do not exist, then what ceases to attain Nirvana? If there is no inherent arising, then is not the unceasing Dharma liberation? If Nirvana is attained from cessation, then if it is like another situation, it is permanent. Therefore, existence and non-existence cannot be Nirvana. If something remains at cessation, then there will be an existence different from things. Because things do not exist, these also do not exist; because things do not exist, there will be no these. From the characteristic other than the basis, the basis is established, and the self will not be established. They cannot be established with each other, and what is not established cannot be the basis for establishment. Through these, cause and effect, feeling and the feeler, seer and seen, etc., can be explained. These have all been explained. Because there is nowhere to dwell, and they are established with each other, because they are scattered and the self is not established, because things do not exist, the three times do not exist, only conceptual thoughts. Because the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena, arising, abiding, and ceasing, do not exist. Therefore, conditioned phenomena themselves do not exist. There is also nothing in unconditioned phenomena. Not decaying, not ceasing, nor decaying. Abiding is not abiding, and not abiding is not abiding. Arising is not arising, and not arising is not arising. Conditioned and unconditioned phenomena are all like this. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
