Measured by three abidings. Measured by three abidings. Second, measured by three abidings is: the wind that moves the outer appearance is exhausted, so the basic awareness abides without coming and going. By abiding in this way, the pure land reaches its measure. The wind that moves the inner aggregates is exhausted, so the body abides without moving. By abiding in this way, the illusions of samsara are purified. The wind that moves the secret thoughts is exhausted, so the thoughts abide without flowing. By abiding in this way, the causes of the mind's thoughts moving are exhausted. At that time, there are two situations: the measure is shown by dreams, and signs appear in the three doors. First, grasping the measure by dreams is: those with sharp faculties and great diligence, because the dream dissolves into the dharmadhatu, pure sleep appears as clear light. This is a sign that the connection of habitual patterns is severed, and the light body is attained in this life, leading to enlightenment. Those of medium capacity recognize in dreams and are accustomed to transformation, so they will surely recognize the bardo and be liberated. Those of lower capacity have the continuous exhaustion of bad habitual dreams, so they will only dream of good things, a sign of exhaling as a natural emanation body. The appearance of signs in the three doors is: as a sign of seeing the direct perception of the nature of reality, the body does not stay in activity, and because the pulse is slow, it does not move like a turtle placed in a cane box. Because the basis of speech is pure, one does not want to speak like a mute. Because the mind realizes self-liberation without grasping, it stays in meditation like a dakini entering sleep. As a sign of seeing the experience of increasing progress, the wind dissolves into the central channel, and there is no good or bad thought, so the body does not groom or adorn itself like a sick person. Speech transcends negation and affirmation, so one speaks gibberish spontaneously like a madman blurting out his own words. The mind's collection of thoughts dissolves on its own, so like a person poisoned seven times who knows he will die, the thought is determined not to return to samsara. The three signs of wisdom reaching its measure are: the body has mastery over the channels and winds, so like an elephant stuck in the mud pulling itself out with its own strength, it passes through the five elements without obstruction. Speech knows that it transcends words, so like a child in a pottery singing, it attracts others and makes them believe. The mind is primordially pure.

By realizing the meaning of having no basis for repeated rebirths, one has confidence in not reverting to the three realms, like a person cured of smallpox. As a sign of seeing the exhaustion of phenomena, the gross body is purified, and like a corpse in a charnel ground, there is no fear or shame even if an executioner appears. Having realized speech as inexpressible, expression is exhausted, and like an echo in the rocks, duality ceases and one repeats the words of others. With the mind's grasping and thoughts completely purified, one is able to attain enlightenment in an instant, like mist dissolving in the sky. Furthermore, it is said in the Root Tantra: 'Measure with the three abidings: reversed dreams, body, speech, and mind. These are the definite signs and measures.' Additionally, it is important to know that, in brief, the meaning stated in the tantras is as follows: For some who are dull-witted and grasp appearances as real, and for some who only understand the words and cannot fathom the depths, if they experience being able to emanate the body into various forms, appearing in various colors, having a second image appear in a shadow or mirror, or thinking they can know the minds of others, then they should meditate on a wrathful deity, recite fierce mantras, chant the Hum (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Chinese Meaning: Hum), burn gugul incense, wash without beginning or end with great and small amrita, and apply old lime plaster to the limbs. If obstacles appear disguised as a guru or yidam, they should be dispelled by cultivating bodhicitta and emptiness. In particular, if it is not a pure wisdom dakini, but various worldly dakinis who show forms from the sky and make prophecies, and only accomplish common siddhis, know that this is not a sign of purity, but rather attachment and aversion will increase, right and wrong will increase, and one will increasingly go against the Dharma. This means one has come under the control of a dakini. By resting in equanimity on the meaning of no self-nature, the dakini will be under one's control and unable to deceive. These are said to be signs of obstructing demons. Therefore, one must carefully examine the distinctions between experiences and signs without confusing them, and strive not to be controlled by obstructing demons. Furthermore, due to the combination of wind and mind, unreliable samadhi may arise suddenly, or uncertain divine forms and lights may appear in the sky. These are said to be signs of increasing and decreasing experiences. Therefore, at times, one should sit on a wooden plank in the middle of the water.
