The essence of meditation is skillful means; what is meditated upon and the act of meditating are the meditation of skillful means. It is said, "The definition of meditation is because of abiding." And, the meditation of union with skillful means, and the meditation of wisdom itself, and the meditation of non-duality of skillful means and wisdom, that is the most profound of meditations. It is said, "That very view is called meditation in meaning; since day and night pass with Dharma, therefore meditate in union itself." It is said, "Having abandoned laziness and indolence, constantly abide in meditation." It is said, "Free from the meditation of emptiness and clarity, dualistic mind, it is the best of all meditations." So it is said. The Yoga of Conduct. Third, regarding the yoga of conduct, the essence of conduct is not abandoning pleasure and pain, making tastes equal, and enhancing view and meditation. Since all are known as self-awareness, self-arising, and self-liberating, therefore, whatever appearances arise, one acts without acceptance or rejection, hence it is called conduct. If divided, there are three types. Conduct that deviates from ordinary activities is: In the tantra of the Manifest Realization of Dharma Practice, it says, "Writing letters, making offerings, giving alms, listening, reading, and holding, explaining and reciting, contemplating meaning, and meditating, these ten are the gateways of Dharma, the footprints of the guides." So it is said. The conduct of distinguishing between samsara and nirvana is also the same as before. Here, the conduct of raising the path through asceticism is: In order to make view and meditation coincide and enhance them, if one has attachment, then practice with a Dharma friend; if one is without attachment, then practice with the experiential mudra, wandering in charnel grounds or empty valleys in the manner of a beggar or a wounded wild animal, like a bee, and the seven conducts like a wild animal, a mute, a cuckoo, a madman, a lion, a dog, and a pig, acting in accordance with the order of the senses, is called the conduct of ascetic empowerment. The way to practice it is: Relying on one's own capacity, from the beginner engaging in seeking hearing and thinking like a bee, to the equality of taste in pleasure and pain, good and bad, up to the conduct of the yoga master, these seven aspects arise naturally, without obstruction, acting upon circumstances. As it is said in the tantra: "In the essence of conduct, tastes are equal, act on the path of self-arising and self-liberation." So it is said. In Self-Arising it says: "The conduct itself that is without effort, is naturally arising, unadorned, without artificiality, that is the great conduct." So it is said.

And, in the Tantra it is said: "The number of practices is condensed into seven." And: "Practice itself is asceticism and freedom." And in the Union of Sun and Moon it is said: "With bee-like conduct, taste the flavor of all dharmas. With beast-like conduct, abandon the places that cause delusion. With mute-like conduct, completely abandon deluded speech. With snipe-like conduct, cut off doubts about secret means. With madman-like conduct, abandon places of solitary dwelling. With lion-like conduct, abandon fearful thoughts and wander in charnel grounds. With dog-pig-like conduct, abandon discriminations of clean and unclean." Thus it is said. The Yoga of the Fruit. Fourth, regarding the Yoga of the Fruit. Having seized a firm ground and not turning back is the nature of the Fruit, and the basis itself is matured by the path, hence it is called the Fruit. If divided, there are two types. The temporary fruit is all those that mature in common during the path. The ultimate fruit is when all the karma, habitual tendencies, and afflictive obscurations of the three doors are like a snake's knot, self-arising and self-liberating, and that is called the pure, spontaneously accomplished fruit. The way to practice it is to place awareness itself on whatever appears and arises, so that familiarity becomes space, and the way appearances manifest as emptiness and luminosity becomes a state free from affirmation, negation, hope, and worry, becoming the song of reality, and thus quickly gaining stability. Also, in the Tantra it is said: "What is called the Fruit is seizing a firm ground, like a king seizing a throne, it does not change, it does not reverse." And: "Maturation is called the Fruit." And: "If the Fruit is divided, it is gathered into two, namely temporary and ultimate." And: "Showing the way the Fruit matures, it is not destroyed by conditions, it does not reverse." And in The Vajrasattva Heart Mirror it is said: "You should know that all the dharmas of the Fruit do not turn back from the three kayas." And so forth it is said. Actual Practice.
