Third, how to rely on a virtuous spiritual friend as the beginning of Dharma. Third, how to rely on a virtuous spiritual friend as the beginning of Dharma. Jowo himself said, "A person who abides in lineage should rely on an excellent spiritual friend." As it is said, now that we have abandoned the eight unfavorable conditions and possess the ten endowments of ourselves and others, we have obtained a leisure and endowment body, and in general, we have encountered the Buddha's teachings. In particular, when we encounter a lineage that has not been interrupted since the Buddha, has not been tainted by evil, and the good lineage has not fallen into evil, such as the teachings of Jowo Je Lhache, relying on the stages of the path of the three types of individuals, we can engage in genuine practice of listening, thinking, and meditating on the excellent Dharma. Although we ourselves are suitable vessels, we definitely need a virtuous spiritual friend who can guide us. Therefore, the teacher's letter to a friend says, "Relying on a virtuous spiritual friend is celibacy. The Fully Accomplished One has taught that it is complete. Relying on an excellent person is relying on the Victorious One. Many have attained peace by relying on (a spiritual friend)." As it is said. If there is no virtuous spiritual friend, even if all qualities are perfectly complete, without a lama, one cannot reach the end of samsara. As it is said. Previously, a group led by Putowa was walking down from the place of Drom Ban Dewa and fell into a puddle. Putowa thought, even going to the land of sunlight, it is impossible without a guide. For the path of omniscient wisdom that has never been traversed since beginningless time, a virtuous spiritual friend who can guide the way is definitely needed. Therefore, Geshe Dolpa said, "The head of all instructions is not abandoning the virtuous spiritual friend." As it is said, just as it will be explained below when discussing the necessity of a pure source of Dharma, one should properly rely on a qualified lama. Regarding this, Lord Maitreya said, "One should rely on a spiritual friend through respect, offerings, service, and practice." As it is said. In the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, it says, "From the biography of Shri Sambhava, learn the way to rely on a lama." As it is said. Jowo said in this very treatise, "Through service, respect, offering precious things, and fulfilling commands, etc., in all ways.

Please the holy Lama! As it is said, Geshe Dromtonpa served (spiritual teachers) like serving Se-tsun and Jowo. Especially when listening to the Dharma, eliminate the three faults of the vessel, and listen with great respect for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma. That is, Sharawa said: The fault of the vessel being like an upside-down mouth cannot be eliminated at once, but whoever recites, asks, and contemplates, asks others and remembers what he has heard, his wisdom is like the sun's rays, opening like a lotus flower. As it is said, if you listen diligently and hold it in your heart, your wisdom will become sharper for what is to be known. Previously, Zhangtsun Sangye Bar, who was not a sharp person at first, relied on the words of Phuchungwa and Karmapa, and with great diligence, he later became the most intelligent among Karmapa's disciples. Just as a vessel is unclean, if you hold your own view as the most superior and are defiled by your own evil views, you will not understand. Even if you understand a little, it will not become the cause of non-inverted practice, so listen with an impartial mind. Just as a vessel has a hole in the bottom, do not abandon it, but always diligently protect it. As it is said, abandon the three faults of the vessel. As it is said in the Avatamsaka Sutra by the boy Paljor and the girl Palgyi Lodröma to Norsang, regard the spiritual friend, yourself, the Dharma, and diligent practice as a doctor, a patient, medicine, and nursing the patient respectively, or as a hero, fear, weapons, and defeating the enemy, or as Geshe Dromtonpa said, regard the spiritual friend as a teacher, the Dharma as valid cognition, and yourself as a retinue, thereby generating great respect for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma. Lord Maitreya said: With the thought of knowing, paying homage in due time is called a spiritual friend. As it is said, with the mind of wanting to fully understand everything, when the time is ripe, one must rely on (the spiritual friend) through homage. Sharawa said: One must also rely on (the spiritual friend) with the mind of wanting to fully understand everything. It is okay to understand, and it is not okay to think, "If I get sick, I will rest." It is like Gyatsa Takdar not mastering the four black Dharmas and the four white Dharmas. Rely on it in due time.
