Collected Teachings of Gampopa GM13: Responses to Questions on the Arising of Dharma for Yogis 1-12-1a (Na) Homage to the Guru. Someone asked, 'Are the mind and the light of the mind two different things?' The answer was, 'It is as you say. When appearances are intensely gathered into the mind, I say that there is nothing other than the mind alone.' Someone asked, 'Are the Dharmakaya and the light of the Dharmakaya two different things?' The answer was, 'It is as you say. When the realization reaches its ultimate conclusion, I say that there is nothing other than the Dharmakaya alone.' Someone asked, 'Are those like the Nirmanakaya Shakyamuni, who have completely abandoned the body of karma, reaching the ultimate conclusion?' The answer was, 'It is so. After the passing into nirvana, because of the purification of all births, it does not appear in one's own perception, but in the perception of others, the Rupakaya appears.' 1-12-2a Someone asked, 'Does the fact that the two Rupakayas do not appear in one's own perception mean that there is no thought of acting for the benefit of others in one's own perception? Or does it mean that it is completely non-existent in one's own perception?' The answer was, 'There are two ways of looking at it. The virtuous Kadampa teachers prefer the former view, while our lamas prefer the latter view.' The teacher said, 'The appearance in the perception of others is considered to be like an illusion.' 1-12-1b Someone asked, 'If one does not realize it from the beginning, but remembers it after being distracted, and then looks back at the state of distraction and sees that it goes into the Dharmakaya, is that okay or not? Does that distraction hinder it or not? Is it necessary to be constantly undistracted or not?' The answer was, 'If it is okay to look back at it, then that is enough. The conceptual thoughts in between do not hinder it. It is not necessary to be constantly undistracted. Distraction is inevitable.' The teacher said, 'In the nature of reality, distraction and non-distraction are the same.' Someone asked, 'Is this the intention of Jetsun Mila and the Buddhas, or is there something more profound or something to add?' The answer was, 'When you clarify your own mind, even if you meditate on it as being as vast as the sky, it will still arise and abide. Even if you meditate on it as being in a sacred place, it will still come and abide. Whose light is it? It is your own. Self-awareness (Tibetan: རང་རྟོགས།) Self-awareness (Tibetan: རང་རྟོགས།) pervades everything. One knows oneself, one is self-luminous. While being luminous, the light does not cease, it arises naturally. The light is without beginning or end, and there is no distinction between the presence or absence of thoughts in the light. To abide in this state is to transcend the world.' The teacher said, 'There is nothing to add to it. If one tries to add to it, it is only one's own fault. If any addition, realization, or transcendence arises from it, that is also a fault.' Someone asked, 'For an old person who has been born for a long time, will there still be body odor or dirt?' The answer was, 'There will be body odor.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

‘There is neither property to give away nor land to rent out. They come to me, only to make futile requests and then leave in disappointment, is that so?’ If a person has determined the direction when realizing self-nature, but cannot recognize self-nature in a dream, then can he be liberated in the bardo (intermediate state)?’ I asked. All the lamas said, ‘One must be liberated in a dream.’ But I think that even if one is not liberated in a dream, one can be liberated in the bardo. If, when practicing now, dreams become unclear, leading to the inability to recognize self-nature, then the bardo will be clearer than now, so one will definitely be liberated.’ If a person can now control the arising and ceasing of self-nature, then when he dies, can he control the arising and ceasing in the bardo, or will he directly attain liberation?’ I asked. ‘If the continuum of self-nature is uninterrupted now, then one can directly attain liberation in the bardo.’ Is it necessary to practice generation stage and recite mantras in addition to practicing self-nature alone?’ I asked. ‘Reciting some mantras can bless speech, so recite some mantras. There is no need to visualize deities; recite mantras in the state of luminous self-nature.’ If one has realized the ultimate bodhicitta (བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་སེམས་,梵文: बोधिचित्त,罗马:bodhicitta,字面意思:觉悟之心) and continuously maintains this state, is it necessary to practice relative bodhicitta?’ I asked. ‘There are three situations: arising from habituation, arising from practice, and arising from realization. Arising from habituation refers to having practiced in previous lives, so there is no need to practice in this life to generate bodhicitta. Arising from practice refers to generating bodhicitta through practice in this life. Arising from realization refers to naturally generating compassion and bodhicitta towards sentient beings who have not realized the truth through realizing the truth. There is no need to separately practice the two relative bodhicittas. After realizing the truth, naturally generating compassion and benefiting others is the cause and effect. Afflictions will also be naturally eliminated.’ Even if one says that one has realized self-nature, if one still indulges in evil deeds, or if compassion and bodhicitta become weak, then it means that self-nature has not truly arisen. Jetsun Milarepa (རྗེ་བཙུན་མི་ལ་རས་པ,Jetsun Milarepa) once said this.’ The lama replied, ‘Indeed, that is so.’ When Jetsun (རྗེ་བཙུན,Jetsun) was sick, did he feel discomfort?’ I asked. ‘When he is sick, he does not feel discomfort or pain. In the place where he is sick, light shines brightly, and he is not disturbed.’ For a person possessed by a demon, it is more helpful to focus on the place where he is sick and practice luminosity than to recite mantras.’ What is meant by integrating the samadhi (མཉམ་ཞག,梵文:समाधि,罗马:samādhi,字面意思:三摩地) and post-meditation (རྗེས་ཐོབ,梵文:पश्चात्लब्ध,罗马:paścāllabdha,字面意思:后得) of self-nature?’ I asked. The lama replied, ‘According to Sopa Rinpoche's teaching, no matter what one does, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, one should not be separated from luminosity and should always remain in the state of self-nature; this is integration.’ Sometimes one forgets and falls into conceptual thoughts, and then one remembers again and returns to the state of self-nature. Is this considered not integrated?’ I asked. ‘This is not considered integrated.’ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
