The method of stabilizing the mind by counting dependent origination. The method of stabilizing the mind by counting dependent origination. Having completely abandoned the darkness of ignorance along with its imprints, I prostrate with great joy as a prelude, to proclaim the profound words of dependent origination for the sake of beings. This is explained for the sake of those who are beginners and heavily influenced by ignorance. In summary: Signs and benefits, what is to be known, and, Assembly and meditation, grasping the limit, and, The order of arising, the degree of stability, the method of firming, And abandoning wrong thoughts, are ten in total. Among these, what are the signs of a person practicing ignorance? This is a person practicing ignorance: even with a small object of delusion, they are densely entangled with ignorance, and it increases greatly; what need is there to mention those of medium and large size? That entanglement with ignorance also remains in the mind-stream for a long time, and that entanglement with ignorance also continues for a long time, and they are overcome by deluded dharmas, and are unable to overcome deluded dharmas, having dull faculties, foolish faculties, weak faculties, laxity in bodily actions, laxity in verbal actions, thinking wrongly, speaking wrongly, acting wrongly, great laziness, inability to accomplish, weak speech, an unruly mind, forgetfulness, not acting with mindfulness, wrong views, difficulty in separating, difficulty in abandoning, fondness for the inferior, foolishness, stuttering, muteness, gesturing with hands, inability to fully understand the meaning of well-spoken and wrongly-spoken dharmas, being robbed by circumstances, relying on others; those similar to these, know that they are the signs of a person practicing ignorance. Thus it is said. Among these, the benefit is that if one becomes accustomed to dependent origination, one will abandon ignorance and generate correct views. Thus it is said: Whoever relies on things, Like the moon in water, Neither truly real nor false.

Ra. Do not steal those desires. Thus it is said. Regarding this, what should be known is summarized into four: number, essence, definition, and what gathers them. Among these, the number is twelve: ignorance, actions due to ignorance, consciousness due to actions, name and form due to consciousness, the six sense sources due to name and form, contact due to the six sense sources, feeling due to contact, craving due to feeling, grasping due to craving, becoming due to grasping, birth due to becoming, aging and death due to birth, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and agitation. The essence of ignorance is clinging to any one of these six elements as singular, and perceiving them as a whole, and so on. Thus, because there is ignorance, attachment, hatred, and delusion arise towards objects. Among these, what are attachment, hatred, and delusion towards objects? This is called actions due to ignorance. Individually distinguishing things is called consciousness. The four aggregates that arise together with consciousness and are closely grasped are name and form. The faculties that rely on name and form are the six sense sources. The union of the three dharmas is contact. Experiencing contact is feeling. Attachment to feeling is craving. The increase of craving is grasping. When grasping arises, the action that produces existence is becoming. The aggregates that arise from that cause are birth. The maturing of the aggregates after birth is aging. The destruction of the aggregates after aging is death. Dying and being intoxicated, the complete torment within with manifest attachment is sorrow. Speaking words arising from sorrow is lamentation. Experiencing displeasure with the collection of the five consciousnesses is suffering. Having attention is mental suffering. Mental suffering with attention is displeasure. Furthermore, whatever afflictions are similar to these are

It is called disturbance. The explanation is that ignorance is due to great darkness. The aggregates are due to manifestation. Consciousness is due to discernment. Name and form are due to dependence. The six sense sources are due to the door of birth. Contact is due to touching. Feeling is due to experiencing. Craving is due to thirst. Grasping is due to attachment. Existence is due to generating rebirth. Birth is due to the arising of aggregates. Aging is due to the maturing of aggregates. Death is due to destruction. Sorrow is due to grief. Lamentation is due to verbal wailing. Suffering is due to bodily harm. Displeasure is due to mental harm. Disturbance is due to affliction. What encompasses these? These three encompass them: affliction, karma, and suffering. Here, the collection refers to observing elsewhere things like perfectly pure discipline. Here, one should contemplate a slight difference: this delusion does not know or see the means of actions that transcend the world; therefore, if one falls into only the lower realms, how can one attain enlightenment? Thus it is said: "The deluded do not see the dharmas; those who rely on delusion will go to the lower realms." Therefore, I should generate the mind to respectfully meditate on dependent arising in order to subdue delusion. What is meditation? First, having completely finished all tasks, sit in the lotus position on a comfortable seat, straighten the body, and calm the mind for a moment. Then think, "Dependent arising is said to be from ignorance to disturbance, and there is nothing beyond this, so I should clearly meditate on this." Then, gradually recite, without counting the numbers, without confusing the order, the general sound and the general meaning, and focus the mind very carefully and clearly on the mental expression. As for measuring the capacity, in general, there are three capacities: superior, middling, and inferior, but there are also practitioners who are very diligent in other virtuous deeds but are weak in meditation, so even those with superior capacity should learn from short sessions. Therefore, all three should learn in the same way from the beginning.
