This is how it should be practiced. Strive! How wonderful it would be if one could attain happiness without fault in this life, and if the happiness already attained would not decline but increase! In future lives, abandoning the beings of the lower realms, relying on the happiness of gods and humans, how wonderful it would be to diligently cultivate the vast accumulations of both worldly and transcendent qualities! One should focus intently on this. Regarding how to gauge the limits of the body: Generally, there are three types of bodies: superior, middling, and inferior. However, it seems difficult for other practitioners to fully engage in the superior state and meditate. Therefore, even those of superior capacity should meditate starting with short sessions. Thus, for the time being, a uniform method of learning should be adopted. Keep the night calm, and the more you sleep, the more your body recovers and expands. During the day, gradually gauge the limits and meditate. For example, on the first day, meditate once in the morning for a duration of time it takes to walk half the distance of an arrow's range with normal steps. In the afternoon, meditate once in the same way. Then, for ten days, add one session each day and meditate. Then, for ten days, add one session each day and meditate. For example, in the afternoon, meditate once in the same way. If minor illnesses occur, they should be treated immediately. Do not endure and continue to meditate. If there is no physical discomfort, meditate as mentioned above. In this way, you will gradually come to know the limits of your body. Regarding the sequence of the arising of mind, there are seven stages: First, when practicing equanimity towards beings who are dearest to your heart, a mind of benefit and happiness will arise, undisturbed by discordant factors. Even after rising, whenever you remember, the mind of benefit and happiness will arise effortlessly. Specifically, while practicing equanimity, the body will feel slightly comfortable, and the mind will clearly focus on the being being contemplated, and this focus will bring joy to the mind. After that, it is towards those who are close. After that, it is towards those who are neutral. After that, it is towards the neighbors. After that, it is towards those who live in your own village. After that, it is towards those who live in other villages. After that, it is towards those in one or two directions, and so on.

Everything will arise with the same characteristics. How long does it take for the mind to abide in loving-kindness? Like this, the yogi should constantly practice and familiarize themselves with the yoga of loving-kindness. Because of repeated practice, whether it is the cause or the place, the object appears and the characteristics can be individually distinguished, but without intentional effort, many minds of loving-kindness naturally arise. For example, because of being very familiar with loving-kindness, there is no anger, and it should be known that the mind will not engage in dharmas that are in accordance with harmful intent, and only then can loving-kindness be attained. The method of instruction for this is that after knowing that the mind has abided, the number of sessions should be reduced compared to previous practice, but the duration should be slightly longer. Practice should also be done in the morning and evening. For all sentient beings, the desire to give benefit and happiness, the attachment that is without affliction, is called the mind of loving-kindness, and it should be based on how much was invested before, and do not generate excessive craving. Practice until the body is tired, or the mind is tired, or there is panic as soon as you practice, or strength emerges, or the head is heavy, or there is shaking, or trembling, or insomnia at night, or food is tasteless, or there are many errors in speech, etc., practice until there are no signs of slight discomfort. Once these signs appear, rest, massage the body, and use food and drink that are in accordance with the Dharma to enhance the body's energy, and practice day and night until it returns to its original state, and when you want to practice, practice for a short time each time. After the energy is enhanced, practice once each in the morning and evening, and also engage in other virtuous deeds. So, what is the abandonment of weariness? Like this, the nature of loving-kindness is to want all sentient beings to be happy, but sentient beings abide in suffering and the cause of suffering, so compassion arises from this, and because compassion is very familiar and practiced many times, relying on the suffering of others, one will generate great mental suffering for oneself. Therefore, one will become very weary and abandon sentient beings. After abandoning sentient beings, one will fall away from the Great Vehicle. Therefore, in order to abandon weariness

In order to enable all beings to truly realize the absence of inherent existence, one should cultivate vipassanā. As it is said in the sutra: Compassion alone will also abandon sentient beings, because it gives rise to weariness. Wisdom alone will also abandon, because it sees the suffering of others as hateful. Therefore, the two must be combined. Although the way of activity is inconceivable, it is impossible because I have no wisdom. However, because I do not pursue meaning and have not heard the teachings of the wise, I have written this considering the benefits. It is like a person with blurred vision looking at something and then pointing it out to others, saying, "This is what it is." I ask the wise ones for forgiveness. This concludes the brief writing on the method of abiding the mind through the cultivation of loving-kindness. The method of abiding the mind through the cultivation of loving-kindness.
