The method of settling the mind through the practice of loving-kindness. The method of settling the mind through the practice of loving-kindness. Abandon all anger, pain, and habitual tendencies. Cherish all beings as if they were your only child. I prostrate to the one who proclaims teachings like a medicine that extracts pain, and I will explain the method of cultivating loving-kindness as taught by him. In summary, there are ten aspects: signs, benefits, what is to be known, accumulation, practice, grasping the measure, the order of arising, the degree of abiding, the method of relying, and abandoning discouragement. Among these, the sign is to grasp the sign of being prone to anger. So, what are the signs of a person who indulges in anger? Here, a person who indulges in anger is one who, for things that cause anger, even with a small reason for anger, generates thick and intense entanglements of anger. What need is there to mention medium and large matters? Moreover, that entanglement of anger remains in the mind for a long time, and that entanglement of anger continues for a long time. He is overwhelmed by the things that cause anger and cannot overwhelm the things that cause anger. His senses are not gentle, his senses are not mild, his senses are rough, his senses are vulgar. In other aspects, such as: body and speech are very prone to conflict, easily separated, easily discouraged, quarrelsome, talkative, loud, with many disagreements, low in actions, revealing the bottom line of actions, base in conduct, unstable in conduct, with much unhappiness, much conflict, impatient, easily frustrated, of a discordant nature, not accepting harmony, easily angered, of an uncontrollable nature, with much conflict, thinking angrily and violently, speaking rudely and barbarously. Even if he speaks only a little, he will conflict with others, generate harmful thoughts, and continue to harbor malice, create disputes, have an angry face, unwilling to see the good face of others, and feel jealous and hateful of the wealth of others.

These are to be recognized as the signs of someone who has practiced anger. Regarding its benefits, it is as stated in the "Moon Lamp Sutra": In hundreds of thousands of millions of lands, countless kinds of offerings, with which one constantly makes offerings to the excellent ones, cannot match the number of minds of loving-kindness. Thus it is said in the sutra. It is also said in the "Auspicious Verses Sutra": Whoever cultivates a mind of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, that immeasurable and undisturbed mind, is the supreme auspiciousness. Thus it is said in the sutra. Regarding what should be known, in brief, there are two: divisions and essence. Among them, there are three divisions: focusing on sentient beings, focusing on phenomena, and without focus. Among them, the loving-kindness that focuses on sentient beings, it is said in the sutra, is the loving-kindness of those who initially generate the mind of enlightenment. The essence is the wish to benefit and bring happiness to others, which is attachment without afflictions. Regarding the supporting conditions, generally, one should look to other aspects such as pure morality. Here, one should contemplate a little. For example, just as a sprout cannot grow on dry tobacco, if one's own mindstream is filled with anger, then other worldly and transworldly virtues cannot arise, let alone attain the unsurpassed great enlightenment. As it is said: Holding a mind of the pain of anger, the mind does not experience the feeling of peace, neither joy nor happiness is attained, one cannot sleep and becomes unstable. Thus it is said in the sutra. In the "Noble Manjushri Emanation Sutra" it is also said: One who is called an angry person, an angry person, is so called because he destroys the roots of virtue accumulated over hundreds of thousands of eons. Therefore, in order to generate the roots of worldly and transworldly virtue, one must first strive to moisten one's own mindstream, which is like dry tobacco, with loving-kindness, which is like water. One should generate the mind in this way. Regarding the meditation: Like this, in a pleasant place, on a comfortable cushion, sit in the lotus position, straighten the body and sit for a while. Then, regarding a human being, whether it is my friend, relative, or someone pleasing, think: This is my parent, I must repay their kindness.
