The Talk of Solitude. A Gift to Sustain the Earth. The Talk of Solitude. A Gift to Sustain the Earth. In Sanskrit: Viveka Kathā. In Tibetan: The Talk of Solitude. Homage to the Bodhisattva Manjushri, who has become a youth! Those who desire the bliss of attaining asceticism, have seen the behavior of those who act dissolutely. A monk who truly relies on perfect solitude, speaks these words: To abandon poverty, the Thus-Gone One, highly praised the empowerment of peace, and repeatedly received it. How does poverty, which is extremely attached due to familiarity with the ascetic household, sink in, difficult to overcome? The noble, incomparable one, dwelling under a tree, seeing the arising and ceasing of beings, the bliss of peace fully ripened, a virtuous life, will attain an achievement far superior to humans. By eliminating the bonds of the mind with the power of antidotes, in forests devoid of birth, the yogi, satisfied with the nectar of near-peace, will sleep and awaken in bliss. At night, with the moon's radiance and the extremely bright, stars spread out as offerings, the mind relying on solitude is definitely peaceful, and extraordinary joy will arise. Wherever a monk, due to solitude, is without fault, peaceful, and transformed into bliss. Wherever there is attachment to truly relying on worldly things, the mind is tormented by various poverties. Just as a water tree, bamboo, or impure light, bears fruit and then shows its own destruction, likewise, after liberation from the ascetic household, you will see yourself being suppressed and attached. Just as mountain deer covered in earth's dust, accomplish only a little with grass and leaves, the mind desires to incline towards solitude, not even the vast abundance of the four continents. The virtue of asceticism showing the flowing water under a tree, those who fully embrace it, having completely abandoned it, that source of bliss that is intimately connected with one's own mind, kings do not have. The tips of the green trees swayed by the winds, with fine and even rain falling, the unwavering, contemplative dwelling in the mountain crevices, a monk creates virtue at night. Having moved due to familiarity with defiled desires, I, abandoning the attachment of service, without dependence, should rejoice in whatever forest is devoid of birth, having become a monk, do not become meaningless. A monk

The ego is harmless to oneself, and does not engage in any acquisition. The mire of clinging to the inferior is a deceiver of the world of life. Water and stone marrow have no roots. When earthly power increases, it becomes unbearable. One should endure with discernment, but should not enter into a discipline that is completely ruined. Just as ships sink in the waves of a turbulent ocean due to the burden of precious jewels, so too, the burden of gains and attachments associated with the household destroys those who rely on the supreme and vast. The peaceful mountain deer that dwell in the forest are a symbol of disturbance by the movements of young women. Like enemies, those who desire peace for themselves should diligently practice the utmost solitude of discipline. When wise people are afflicted by the poison of sensual tastes, if they are tormented by even a little desire, then they should completely abandon them and exclaim "Alas!" at the uncontested austerity. Just as the disciplined walk and stand with their feet, so too, familiarity increases desire. The fearful impact of the manifest droplets of one's own waves is like great clouds raining on the Yamuna River. Even those who practice austerity in a lowly manner are followed by the power of the god of desire. Thus, there is no attachment to the household for a great king who is complete with what he holds in his own hands. After abandoning one's own home and relatives, whose faces are dripping with tears, and becoming attached to the homes of others who are inferior, this renunciate has no shame at all. Whoever desires liberation, after abandoning his own home, desires the homes of others whom he does not know, is like crossing the turbulent waves of the ocean and sinking into the footprints of an ox. What is measured by the practices permitted by the Tathagata, which eliminate evil? Attachment to the homes of others becomes defiled by the desire for inferior wealth. The river is bordered by fragments of fallen nilotpala flowers. Doubts of white sand and swans, Kadamba, abide. Herds of forest elephants play, with various scattered waves, greatly increasing the joy of ascetics who delight in solitary places. Having eliminated the hungry ghosts who strive for worldly enjoyments, the state of those who enjoy pleasant and delightful pleasures that have not been initiated is like the opening of a lotus.
