The Talk on Abandoning the Four Distortions The Talk on Abandoning the Four Distortions In Sanskrit: Caturviparayakatha. In Tibetan: The Talk on Abandoning the Four Distortions. Homage to Manjushri, the Youth! When noble beings utterly denounce desirable realms, if you become disillusioned with that, why would you not become disillusioned? Your ugly body, too, is criticized for its many faults. Although there are many virtues, please listen to my advice a little. Is this permanent, or impermanent? Even if it is impermanent, is this existence for the sake of happiness? Even if it is not for happiness, is it pure? Even if it is not pure, is it independent? Since it is not permanent, not a cause of happiness, not pure, and not independent, why do you, whose intelligence is greatly diminished, cling to a body filled with hundreds of faults? When one falls from the top of a high mountain to the ground, when it is destroyed, does it experience happiness in the sky? Since one runs constantly from birth towards death, how can sentient beings obtain happiness in any interval? Who can enter underground, like the dragon king extracting the root of a lotus? Who can ascend to the heavens, eliminating the assembly of gods including Indra? Who can wander on the earth, to be gathered by the lord of death like gathering ga, na, and ragu? Where can you dwell without being seized by that lord of death, so that you become fearless? Even if one lives long, the body will become utterly decrepit due to old age. Life is short, and the lord of death will come in an instant. Between old age and death, a person dwelling in poverty, having fallen into distress, cannot obtain happiness from this or that. There is no affection for children, no respect for the elderly, no slight glance at young women, and no compassion for the wretched. Such a lord of death, who has no principles, do not think that he will wait for me, or that the young body is muscular and strong. When one hears that a small amount of wealth near the house has been stolen, it is reasonable to think that one should protect one's own house. However, the lord of death takes people away from each and every house every day, why are you not afraid of him?

Is there no place to stand? Why not strive? Like a sacrificial animal adorned with garlands, surrounded by people, Being led to the slaughterhouse, each step increasing the agony of death. Similarly, indulging in pleasures, each day leads closer to the Lord of Death. Alas, you wealthy ones, do not let arrogance fill your hearts. Know that even the longest human life is only a hundred years. Moreover, from the initial childhood to the final old age, it is meaningless. Sleep and illness destroy all hope. How much remaining life is left for those living in comfort? The kings who triumphed in battle, the lords of the thirty-three heavens (Indra), The ascetics who dispelled darkness with the light of wisdom, will also die. Once seized by Yama, wealth cannot redeem, nor can friends. If personal effort cannot prevent it, to whom can people turn for refuge? Reading scriptures, engaging in scholarship and crafts, Having trusted friends, beloved wives, and attending servants, These people, the merciless Lord of Death pervades the earth, If he destroys them, what can anyone do? Quickly do good deeds! Alas, ignorant people, it is said that being born in a good realm in this life is wonderful. However, old age, death, and disease also come without mercy. Countless sufferings born from others arise from birth itself. They give birth to children, yet praise them for the purpose of killing them. Tightly bound in a narrow skin, unable to breathe, in a difficult situation. In an unclean abyss, burned by the unbearable heat of the stomach's fire. Unable to speak, unable to hear, unable to move, lying helplessly. For nearly ten months in the womb, a person experiences suffering. After a difficult birth, they are burned by the sun's rays, Troubled by cold winds, mosquitoes, flies, and other insects. The umbilical cord is cut by relatives and enemies, causing illness. Even in the womb, indulging in illusory visions is terrible. The body's actions are limited to the movement of hands and feet. All that can be said,
