Arya Mulasarvastivada Shramanera Karika by Nagarjuna. Arya Mulasarvastivada Shramanera Karika. Nagarjuna. In Sanskrit: Arya Mulasarvastivada Shramanera Karika. In Tibetan: The Verse Summary for a Novice Monk According to the Sarvastivada School. Homage to the Omniscient One! I prostrate to the Protector, the Omniscient One, the Dharma, and the Noble Sangha. I will briefly explain the rituals for a novice monk. Having renounced the world with faith in the teachings of Shakya Simha, and striving diligently with steadfast discipline, one should protect the precepts as one would one's own body. In the last part of the night, rise from bed. Recite until dawn. Having washed away the dirt from the face and teeth, respectfully prostrate to the Perfectly Awakened Buddha. Gently knock on the door where the lama resides. Having entered, respectfully ask the lama about their well-being, etc. Having asked what needs to be done, for the sake of mandalas, etc., examine the water with a strainer, etc., in order, above, middle, and below. Even if there is no strainer, etc., fill the vase with a handful or leaves. Carefully observe the large and small creatures in the water for a long time. A compassionate person should carefully examine and then use the liquids. If there are living beings, filter them well. Do not harm living beings. Grass, dung, wood, etc., whatever is needed, make sure there are no living beings in them. Protect from killing living beings with discipline. Prepare a cushion, water, earth, a toothpick, and clay. Wash the alms bowl, etc., and do all the things the lama needs. Then, knowing the time, make prostrations, and likewise, respectfully join your palms, and say to the lama, "May I eat or not?" Wash your hands properly. Then, without speaking, be mindful of moderation, and eat with the thought of averting the disease of bloating. Having eaten and likewise drunk, and then pure water. In order to properly increase generosity, recite two verses of generosity. If there is a secret instruction, meditate. Strive to read. Be diligent in the Vinaya and rituals, and in practice. With unwavering discipline and mind,

Thinking thus without error, others, self, or any others, Killing will destroy the Brahmacharya. Whether one has precepts or has broken them, Likewise, for those afflicted by illness, Whatever is heard, suffering and exhaustion, That Dharma talk of certain death should not be spoken. Medicine, mantras, and knowledge, Sending towards the direction of death, Others, all sorts of methods, Killing will destroy the Brahmacharya. Animals, as well as hell beings, Pretas, or even gods, Killing will cause one to fall into the lower realms, And obtain great sins. The one with Brahmacharya thinks of killing, From actions done by body and speech, Even if a person lives, for that one, There will be three kinds of faults. Stones, sticks, fists, and blows, And other harms besides, Cows and so forth, do not harm, Horses and so forth, do not ride. The novice, self or any others, With thieving mind, power, and stealth, Without error, from another person, From their place, about five masha, Or whatever comes from their own land, Stealing four karshapana, Stealing that will destroy the precepts. At the time of the act, it is a wrong action. Bulbs, roots, fruit trees, Trunks, leaves, bark, water, Flowers, aquatic and terrestrial, Fields, crops, and land, Boats, wood, and dice, Likewise, the seeds of boats, Living beings without feet, Two-legged, many-legged, stealing is not allowed. The wealth of people by the one with Brahmacharya, Gold and so forth, whatever it may be, Whatever is stolen with a thieving mind, If the value is complete, then the vow is broken. If the alms bowl and so forth are taken by thieves, Then after teaching the Dharma, one should confess. Or redeem it with its value, If not done thus, it becomes a wrong action. The mind of the one with vows, without damage, In the three gates without damage, When greedily a jewel enters inside, If joy arises, the Brahmacharya is destroyed. Men, women, and hermaphrodites, When the root is pressed, Whatever taste of pleasure is experienced, That also destroys the vows. Because of the desire for pleasure after the limb has arisen, It is easy to put poison into the mouth of a snake. Do not destroy the root of your own body, Thus spoke the Complete Buddha. Even if killed by a snake, It is beneficial to abide in the precepts, Destroying the precepts is suffering, It also obscures liberation and Nirvana. The gods see.
