The essential instructions for meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom. Ratna Akarashanti. The essential instructions for meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom. Ratna Akarashanti. In Indian language: Prajnaparamita-bhavana-upadesha. In Tibetan: The essential instructions for meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom. Homage to the Perfection of Wisdom! The essential instructions for meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom should be written down. Yoga and meditation are synonymous terms. Calm abiding, insight, and the union of calm abiding and insight are the excellent divisions of common yoga. Here, for those who wish to meditate on the Perfection of Wisdom, yoga is explained in four ways: focusing on the extreme of objects, focusing on mind-only, focusing on suchness, and non-focusing. Among these, the first will be briefly discussed: Here, a Bodhisattva who is rich in hearing and contemplation dwells alone in a secluded place, sits in the lotus position, and keeps the body straight. Not too lax, nor too agitated, endowed with mindfulness and awareness, having completely abandoned the naturally distracting consciousnesses of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, one abides in equanimity. With completely clear and mindful awareness, one attends to various aspects. For example: This form is blue and yellow, and so on. This sound is pleasant and unpleasant, and so on. This smell is fragrant and unfragrant, and so on. This taste is sweet and sour, and so on. This touch is cold and hot, and so on. This dharma is happiness and suffering, desire and hatred, space and nirvana, and so on. These six are the realms of objects, appearing distinctly by their very nature. The six realms of consciousness, the nature of inner clarity, are as follows: eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. The basis for these six realms is the realm of the six faculties, of which five are of the nature of pure form, and one is formless. For example:

The eye faculty within the eyeball is like a blooming saffron flower. The ear faculty at the root of the ear is like a knot of wheat that has been twisted and cut. The nose faculty at the root of the nose is like sewing needles joined together. The tongue faculty on the tongue flap is like a half-moon after shaving off just the tip of a hair. The body faculty on the entire body is like the body itself. The mind faculty is like the immediately preceding past mind. Like myself, all sentient beings also possess the eighteen elements, which are apprehended by objects, faculties, and the six consciousnesses. From contemplating the various phenomena belonging to all realms of the ten directions, one should focus on the mind that perceives these various phenomena individually, abandoning even mental expression, and thus become accustomed to calm abiding. When one attains perfect pliancy of body and mind, that is the accomplishment of calm abiding. Then, relying on the accomplishment of calm abiding, these various images are merely all phenomena. For example, from the realm of form to the realm of mind, one should extensively differentiate, thoroughly examine, and perfect insight with a thoroughly examining mind. Following that, the continuous mental engagement with those discriminating images and the mind that focuses on them, both equally and without interruption, is the path of uniting calm abiding and insight. The essential instruction of the Perfection of Wisdom is the first yogic ground of focusing on things as they exist. Then, in the second stage, generating the mind towards the various appearances, one should examine as follows: Merely names, from form being merely a name to mind. Likewise, all phenomena are merely names. Names themselves are not the meaning, because they are very different. Even without clearly understanding the meaning, only the name appears, and even without clearly understanding the name, the meaning appears. Therefore, names are meaningless as they are, form is merely a name and is meaningless. Similarly, all phenomena are merely names. Furthermore, for those who perceive forms in the world, all phenomena are names that are suddenly designated for the sake of convention. From the formless onwards, until all phenomena. These are
