Should be collected. The wise should diligently practice. After observing the merits of meditation, one should rejoice in it. After observing the faults of distraction, one should pacify outward thoughts. When greed, displeasure, etc., arise, one should subdue them accordingly. Afterwards, through manifest actions, the mind should be calmed. The one who diligently keeps vows, after being respectful, will attain the opportunity to enter meditation through effort. Thus it is said. Vipassanā (insight) is also said to be fourfold: In any case, one should distinguish those dharmas. Completely distinguish. Completely understand. Completely examine. Thus it is said. Among them, to individually discern what exists, is to distinguish. To individually discern what exists as it is, is to completely distinguish. Non-discriminating attention combined with wisdom, grasping the appearance of signs, is to completely understand. Universal examination is to completely examine. The explanation of these is that the noble Maitreya said in the Compendium of Abhidharma-samuccaya of the Great Vehicle: How to distinguish those dharmas, completely distinguish, completely understand, completely practice. Taking the antidote to the signs of bad states, and definitely eliminating perversion, and keeping the mind equal on what is not perverted, these are said after approaching. Here, the meaning of these words is that bad states are the imprints of perversion. That is, the characteristic of having the power to continuously increase perversion, existing in the mind-stream. Its sign is that for the sake of completely nourishing it, attachment to perversion is the previous one. When it is exhausted, the bad state is exhausted. Perversion will not arise, because the habituation of the antidote to the sign will exhaust the sign. The antidote is distinguishing and completely distinguishing. Therefore, these two are shown as approaching the antidote to the signs of bad states. Completely understanding is shown as approaching the complete elimination of perversion. Because of distinguishing as it is, after completely eliminating the doubt of perversion, by giving completely with fearless attention, thereby more

Therefore, this is called dispelling inverted thoughts. Thus, this dispels inverted thoughts, thereby making it non-inverted. In the meaning of seeing as clearly as manifest in the non-inverted state, the mind rests and individually understands, which is proper attention. Therefore, this is said to be taking up and showing the mind resting on the non-inverted. Thus, with the completion of the practice of the four aspects of vipassanā, vipassanā is liberated from the bonds of bad migrations. With the completion of the practice of the nine aspects of śamatha, one will be liberated from the bonds of signs, because the sign of inversion is the nature of the cessation of the aspect of the meaning of inversion. As it is said: Within quiescence, insight, practice can liberate, bad migrations and all signs, the yogi's bonds. Thus it is said, the meaning of this verse should be connected as appropriate, not in order. Therefore, yoga and practice are synonyms, while śamatha, vipassanā, and the union of śamatha and vipassanā are common distinctions of yoga.
