The essential instructions for meditating on the Prajñāpāramitā. Ratna Bhava Shanti. The essential instructions for meditating on the Prajñāpāramitā. Ratna Bhava Shanti. The essential instructions for meditating on the Prajñāpāramitā. I prostrate to the Prajñāpāramitā. Thus, the wisdom arising from hearing and thinking has been explained. It has been previously indicated that after obtaining these, one should meditate on the Prajñāpāramitā. From then on, the meditation here will be discussed. The excellent combination of hearing, thinking, and meditating is twofold: combining with reverence and combining continuously. Excellent combination is combining habitually. Combining with reverence, joy, and delight is combining with reverence, and combining without interruption is combining continuously. There are also three types of meditation: śamatha (calm abiding) and vipaśyanā (insight), and the meditation of engaging śamatha and vipaśyanā in union. Among these, the object of śamatha is the image that becomes non-conceptual with regard to how much exists and how it exists as it is. The object of vipaśyanā is the image that becomes conceptual with regard to how much exists and how it exists as it is. This is when a Bodhisattva dwells alone in a secluded place, contemplating the meaning as it has been thought, abandoning the expression of the mind, and repeatedly contemplating the nature of the mind as it appears, until physical and mental pliancy arise, it is contemplating in accordance with śamatha. When it arises, it is śamatha. Having obtained physical and mental pliancy, abiding in that state, one should separately examine with particular devotion to the object of inner samādhi and the realm of images of the meaning as it has been thought, until physical and mental pliancy have not arisen, it is in accordance with vipaśyanā. When it arises, it is vipaśyanā. After that, focusing on the conceptual image itself, when the mind does not cease in that state, and when both are also experienced through the continuous stream of uninterrupted contemplation, then it is called the path of union of śamatha and vipaśyanā.

It is said: Therefore, quiescence and insight are a pair. The relationship is possession, that is, they proceed by mutually binding each other. Here, among the five obscurations, agitation and regret are obscurations to quiescence. Drowsiness, sleep, and doubt are obscurations to insight. Desire and malice are obscurations to both. When drowsiness and sleep are completely eliminated, quiescence is completely purified. When agitation and regret are completely eliminated, insight is completely purified. The Blessed One taught nine aspects of quiescence: As it is, one places the mind within. One continuously places it. One completely places it. One closely places it. One tames it. One pacifies it. One closely pacifies it. One makes it one-pointed. One places the mind in equanimity. First, one withdraws the mind from external objects and completely gathers it inward, and initially examines the mind; this is placing it within. Then, one continuously directs and places that very mind that naturally wavers; this is continuously placing it. Then, having recognized that one is distracted outward due to loss of mindfulness, one withdraws it again and places the mind on that; this is completely placing it. Then, one repeatedly gathers the mind from its naturally vast state, making it subtle and coarse, and enters from higher to higher; this is closely placing it. Then, one looks at the qualities of samadhi and rejoices in that very thing; this is taming it. Then, having looked at the faults of distraction, one makes the mind's outward scattering completely pacified; this is pacifying it. One pacifies attachment and displeasure, and so forth; this is closely pacifying it. Then, one enters into a single object with one's own intention; this is one-pointedness. From what has become incorrect, one strives to correctly distinguish it; this is making it one-pointed. Then, having become accustomed to making it one-pointed, it is spontaneously accomplished, and one enters in one's own way. Having truly gained independence, one holds it; this is placing the mind in equanimity. Thus, in the Ornament of the Sutras it says: The mind is joined with the object, and one does not become distracted from that continuum. Having recognized distraction, one quickly withdraws it again there, inwardly.
