The Verses on the Noble Śālistamba. Nāgārjuna. The Verses on the Noble Śālistamba. Nāgārjuna. In Sanskrit: Ārya Śālistamba Kārikā. In Tibetan: The Verses on the Noble Śālistamba. Homage to the Noble Mañjuśrī! Qualities are limitless, inconceivable. Perfect Buddha, Lord of Compassion. I will explain the verses on the well-connected Śālistamba. The Sage was in Rājagṛha, on the mountain called Vulture Peak, with a large Saṅgha of monks and bodhisattvas, as well as a gathering of those with correct conduct. Having gazed at the Śālistamba, he said, "It arises from causes and conditions. Just so, from causes and conditions arising, the twelve limbs sequentially occur. Whoever sees dependent arising, sees the Dharma and sees the Buddha." Having said this to the monks, the Guide remained without saying anything further. The monk Śāriputra, having heard this, went to the presence of Maitreya. "Maitreya, today the Tathāgata has spoken these words without explaining their meaning. Having remained without saying anything further, how can the meaning of this be realized? What is dependent arising, what is the Dharma? And what is the Buddha? How is seeing dependent arising seeing the Dharma and seeing the Buddha? I speak of my doubts here," Śāriputra said to Maitreya. Maitreya, the master of profound meditation, explained the definitive meaning. The twelve limbs, beginning with ignorance, reach up to death in sequence. Thus, a mere mass of suffering will arise. The Dharma path has eight limbs, and the result is nirvāṇa. In order to fully understand all of this, one is called a Buddha, born from the Dharma. Thus, it is said, through noble vision, whoever sees it, sees it. Whoever is separated from life and so forth, as well as all that is included in near peace, sees dependent arising, the Dharma, and the Buddha, with stainless intelligence. The characteristic of dependent arising possesses words such as "with causes." Whether a Buddha appears or does not appear, this Dharma nature remains. The causes and conditions of external and internal phenomena are twofold. External causes are seeds and so forth, and conditions are shown to be sixfold. Seed, sprout, stalk, and so forth, how the result ensues will be explained. Conditions are

Such as earth, the time arrives in due order. The basis, moisture, and maturity, the increase of grains and enlightenment, the changes are the actions of these, acting accordingly. If the conditions do not gather, even if there is a seed, there will be no sprout. If it is said that the seed itself is non-existent, even if the conditions are present, it is the same. The cause and likewise the conditions are, free from self-grasping and the like. Because the cause and conditions gather, the result of karma is not wasted. It is not born from itself, nor from others, not from both, nor from a creator or time. Likewise, it is not made by Ishvara and the like, not born from nature, nor born without a cause. The engagement of cause and conditions, also appears as having beginningless time. With the five causes, they are considered to be the external, dependent arising. It is not permanent, nor is it annihilation, it is not transfer, from a small cause, a great result is accomplished, and also for the sake of following similarity, the sprout is not considered like the seed. Without a cause, there is no birth of a sprout, cessation and birth are equal, like the high and low of the head and tail of a balance. Likewise, the internal cause and, conditions are considered as two types. The first cause of this is ignorance, the last is death, in that order. The twelve branches, afflictions, the three parts of the nature of birth and so on, arise from cause and conditions, abandoning the agent and so on. If the first ignorance is absent, then the last death will not occur. Other than those, there is no self or what belongs to self. If the first ignorance arises, then the last death will also appear. Thus, this is the internal cause, the conditions for this are six types. The last is consciousness, the first is earth, it is considered as an internal condition. Hardness and subsequent gathering, maturity and increase of breath, enlightenment itself. Those who follow consciousness and form, endowed with the five consciousnesses, and there also the afflicted mind, these are the internal conditions. From the aggregation of the elements, the body is considered to be born. These, the self and what belongs to self, it is considered that conceptual thoughts do not arise. If those are present, they will arise, if those are absent, they will not occur. Those do not possess self and so on, nor do they belong to anyone else. If one perceives a lump and so on, that is ignorance obscuring the three realms.
