Quintessential Instructions Compiled from the Meaning of the Sutra Section. Quintessential Instructions Compiled from the Meaning of the Sutra Section. Marme Dze Yeshe (Lamp-making Wisdom). In Indian language: Sutrartha Samucchayopadesha. In Tibetan language: Quintessential Instructions Compiled from the Meaning of the Sutra Section. Homage to the Three Jewels. Like the ocean, vast and deep as the sky, Having viewed all the mother treasuries of the Sutra Section, From the mouth of the glorious Lama, I shall write down the meanings that are difficult to find. Here, the Dharma like the wealth of Bodhisattvas is fifty, such as like life and so on. I shall explain them a little. As it is said: Life is life, warmth, and consciousness is the basis. Thus, sentient beings cherish life and rely on life, just as Bodhisattvas cherish the mind of enlightenment like life and rely on it. The Dharma like parents is emptiness and compassion, for without them, Bodhisattvas will not arise. Like a servant is death, the precepts, and counting the accumulated karma, which must be accompanied three times day and night. Like a house is the ten virtues, this is the house itself, for it cuts off the gates of the evil destinies. Like wealth is the seven noble riches, having few desires, and being content. Like a friend is doing deeds in the three realms, but thinking of Nirvana, giving great generosity but not hoping for ripening, knowing that all dharmas are unborn but not abandoning the ripening of karma, knowing that all dharmas are without self but generating compassion for sentient beings. Like a root is faith, hearing, giving, and patience. Like a field is morality. Like relatives are the ten perfections. Like a teacher is the six recollections. Like an abbot are the four dharmas in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Kashyapa that do not forget the mind of enlightenment. Like a merchant is the antidotes to the fourteen harms in the Compendium of Trainings. Like a sister are the four immeasurables. Like a slave are the four objects of gathering. Like subjects are dogs, slaves, and outcasts.

Like the letter "Pa," it is to subdue arrogance. Like the eyes, it is thought and the supreme pure thought. Like a mother, it is a virtuous friend. Like a king, it is the Three Jewels. Like water and fertilizer, it is the complete purification of the three circles. Like a guide, it is mindfulness, awareness, proper attention, diligence, and cultivating the antidotes to the four inversions. Like skin, it is not abandoning sentient beings and embracing them. Like ornaments, it is faith, discipline, generosity, learning, and wisdom. Like illness and pain, it is the mind attached to internal and external things. Like a suffering person, it refers to a bodhisattva in lay life thinking: When will I be able to practice celibacy? A renunciate thinks: When will I be able to liberate beings from suffering? Like a lazy person, it refers to a householder who has not abandoned fields, etc., and a renunciate who has not abandoned hypocrisy, etc. In the Sutra of the Aggregate of Discipline, it is said: Monks, even if a renunciate watches elephants fighting, it is still wrong livelihood. Like a good person, it is possessing proper attention. Like a mute person, it is not speaking of others' faults and mistakes, not speaking of one's own merits, and not slandering others. Like a blind person, it is not looking at others' mistakes. Like catching a thief, it is upholding the true Dharma when the pure Dharma declines. Like a child, it is easy to teach, young in age, easy to get along with, easy to satisfy, easy to raise, easy to fill, and knows the Dharma. Like a messenger, it is a bodhisattva with many affairs, many tasks, and a broad mind. Like a minister, it is relying on vows. Like a wise person, it is having no hatred towards sentient beings and being able to be tamed. Like a disciple, it is serving the guru three times during the day and three times during the night, accumulating merit and wisdom, and protecting the vows. Like a welcoming and seeing-off person, it is wanting to first make all sentient beings Buddhas and then become a Buddha oneself. Like a blind person leading the way, it is wanting to first become a Buddha oneself and then benefit others. Like the people of the first kalpa.
