The Differentiation of the Opposing Factors to Samadhi. The Differentiation of the Opposing Factors to Samadhi. The Differentiation of the Opposing Factors to Samadhi is Presented. The Differentiation of the Opposing Factors to Samadhi. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Then, the Bhagavan spoke to the Great Brahma: There are ten types of dharmas that should not be dwelt in or practiced. If yogis follow even a few of these evil practices, they will not even accomplish the root of virtue in the desire realm. If they have previously accomplished it, they will immediately lose and degenerate from it. What need is there to mention attaining the samadhi without breath and form, the three vehicles, or the one vehicle? What are the ten? They are as follows: Some people in the world want to meditate on samadhi, but they are preoccupied with the necessities of life, and due to the circumstances of livelihood, they are afflicted. Some people want to meditate on samadhi, but they break their vows and commit many transgressions. Some people want to meditate on samadhi, but they have inverted views and are attached to worldly omens of good and bad, and their body and mind are not tamed. Some people want to meditate on samadhi, but their minds are agitated and wild, and they do not incline towards the noble ones, and their senses are wild. Some people want to meditate on samadhi, but they delight in gossiping and causing discord. Some people want to meditate on samadhi, but they revile the noble ones with harsh words and act domineering. Some people want to meditate on samadhi, but they speak empty and false words. Some people want to meditate on samadhi, but due to attachment and jealousy, they are not happy with the gain, respect, and possessions of others. Some people want to meditate on samadhi, but with hatred, they generate harmful thoughts towards sentient beings. Some people want to meditate on samadhi, but with wrong views, they believe that there is no cause and effect. Great Brahma, know this well: These are called the ten types of dharmas that should not be dwelt in or practiced. If those who meditate on samadhi follow even a few of these evil practices, they will not even accomplish the virtue of the desire realm.

If it has already been accomplished, but immediately lost and degenerated, then what need is there to mention the attainment of samadhi with form and without form, and the three vehicles and the one vehicle? Great Brahma, there are also ten dharmas that should not be dwelt in and practiced. If those who meditate on samadhi possess any of these evil practices, samadhi will not be fully accomplished. If it has already been accomplished, it will immediately be lost and degenerated. What are the ten? They are: delighting in and being attached to things to be done; delighting in and being attached to frivolous talk; delighting in and being attached to indulgence in sleep; delighting in and being attached to seeking wealth; delighting in and being attached to beautiful forms; delighting in and being attached to pleasant sounds; delighting in and being attached to fragrant smells; delighting in and being attached to delicious tastes; delighting in and being attached to soft touches; and delighting in and being attached to thinking and examining. Great Brahma, it should be understood in this way: if those who meditate on samadhi possess any of these ten dharmas that should not be dwelt in and practiced, samadhi will not be fully accomplished. If it has already been accomplished, it will immediately be lost and degenerated. If that samadhi is not accomplished, then no matter how much accumulation of virtue there is, it will not become a cause of happiness. Those who, for the sake of accomplishing their own enjoyment and giving with faith, will cause evil dharmas of mind and mental factors to arise. Because of this, they will also violate the laws of kings and great ministers. They will rebuke and scold some, and whip others. Some will have their limbs and extremities cut off, and some will even be killed. Because of this cause and condition, they will be afflicted by severe diseases, suffer for a long time, have short lives, and after death, they will be born into any of the three lower realms, even falling into the Avici hell. Like Atrakas, Aradakas, and Asuras, they will degenerate from meditation, fall into the Avici hell, and experience countless unbearable great sufferings.
