is not fully established. Eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are the aggregates of consciousness. The eye consciousness and so on, each or individually, their nature is not observed. Thus, relying on the eye, for the various forms, eye consciousness arises. If the aggregate of form itself exists, then it arises from the eye and form. If the eye and form do not exist, how does consciousness arise? Thus, for the time being, eye consciousness arises. The consciousness of ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind should also be understood by this very reasoning. Mind consciousness is relying on mind, for the various dharmas, mind consciousness arises, that also, having passed, how does consciousness arise without a cause? Thus, for the time being, the past consciousness is ceased. The future is not yet obtained, and the present arising has no abiding. Therefore, any dharma that is not observed as self-existent in the three times, what kind of existence is that? Monks, the aggregate of consciousness is empty of the aggregate of consciousness itself, as it is said, therefore the aggregate of consciousness is also not fully established. Therefore, the specifically pointed out differences of aggregates, elements, and sources have been refuted. Since the aggregates do not exist, it is established that their nature does not exist. Therefore, since the aggregates, elements, and sources are devoid of self-nature, the mind is completely liberated from the grasped and the grasper. Because that mind has no grasped, then the grasper also does not exist. For the time being, how is there no grasped? As it is said, the Bhagavan said to the Lord of Secrets: The mind is not seen, is not seen, and will not be seen by the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas. Lord of Secrets, the mind is not blue, not yellow, not white, not red, not madder, not crystal color, not long, not short, not round, not square, not light, not dark, not female, not male, not hermaphrodite. Lord of Secrets, the mind is not the nature of the desire realm, not the nature of the form realm, not the nature of the formless realm, not a god, not a naga, not a yaksha, not a

It is not a flesh-eating demon, not an Asura, not a Garuda, not a Kinnara, not a great belly-crawler. From the conduct of non-humans and non-non-humans, even if sought in every way, it is not found, so it is said. Thus, for the moment, that mind which is grasped does not exist. How is there no grasping? Thus, the Blessed One also said: Lord of Secrets, the mind is not within, not without, nor is it found between the two. How then can it be grasped? Thus, it is free from what is grasped and what grasps. Why is that? Lord of Secrets, that mind is completely pure by its very nature. Therefore, how can that dharma, which when sought in every way, its nature is not found, be grasped? Thus, the mind is completely liberated from what is grasped and what grasps. Because of the equality of dharmas being without self, just as all dharmas are without self, so is the mind. Thus, the Blessed One also said: All dharmas are empty. That mind is the characteristic of emptiness. All dharmas are solitary. That mind is also the characteristic of solitude. Therefore, because of the equality of dharmas being without self, one's own mind is unborn from the beginning. If it is unborn from the very beginning, what is the nature of that which is unborn? It is the nature of emptiness. So it is said. What is the nature of emptiness? It is like the nature of space. Thus, the Blessed One also said: Emptiness is space. That mind is also equal to space. Its nature is enlightenment. Just as space has no nature and arises merely as a name, so too that mind has no nature and arises merely as a name. Thus, the mind should be understood as without arising and ceasing. That is called unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Thus, the Blessed One also said: What is enlightenment? It is the complete understanding of the mind as it truly is. That is unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Thereupon, Lord of Secrets, because all dharmas are nonexistent and cannot be found, it is called unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Why is that? It is the characteristic of space.

That is enlightenment. In that, there is neither realization nor anything to be realized. Why is that? Because enlightenment is the nature of space. Therefore, after seeing the true nature of one's own mind as it is, one focuses on the minds of all sentient beings with skillful means. Alas! How miserable these sentient beings are! These beings have not realized the nature of their own minds, are possessed by the demon of unreal thoughts, and experience various sufferings in samsara. For these sentient beings to realize the nature of the Dharma of their own minds, one should strive and exert effort. This is the arising of one's own mind, which is completely seized by great compassion, abiding especially for all sentient beings. This should be called the mind of enlightenment. As it is said: When wisdom equal to space, The arising of enlightenment has arisen, At that time, the mind is for the benefit of others, Single-pointedly focused, it will arise. One who meditates in this way is meditating on the mind of enlightenment. Thus, the Bhagavan also said: The merit of the mind of enlightenment, If it had form, This entire realm of space would be filled, It would be even greater than that. Thus, this supreme practice of enlightenment is also the root, the source of all dharanis, individual correct knowledge, names, marks, and the qualities of the Buddhas. Thus, the Bhagavan also said: Monks, if I were to teach based on praising the qualities of the mind of enlightenment, it would not come to an end even in an eon. Therefore, generating the mind for omniscience is the basis of the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Therefore, one should practice yoga diligently in this. This is the completion of the practice of the mind of enlightenment, composed by the feet of Acharya Kamalashila. Translated by the monk Dharmapala Bhadra, the translator of Zha Lu, at Grwa Thang. The Practice of the Mind of Enlightenment.
