Instructions for Cultivating Relative Bodhicitta, Written Down by Aśvaghoṣa. Instructions for Cultivating Relative Bodhicitta, Written Down. Aśvaghoṣa. In Sanskrit: Sampriti Bodhicitta Bhavanā Upadeśa Varna Samgraha. In Tibetan: Instructions for Cultivating Relative Bodhicitta, Written Down. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! I shall write a little of the text called "A Heap of Lotuses" on cultivating relative bodhicitta. A person with wisdom and compassion! For the sake of helpless beings, to purify and eliminate sins, having generated the supreme bodhicitta, with the great strides of bodhisattva conduct, if you bring the path of renunciation to completion, be extremely respectful to your father and mother, attend to the elderly, and well protect the ethics of human beings, this is noble conduct. Non-harming and truthfulness, giving and then taking back, and pure conduct, abandoning all clinging, this is the conduct of the happy realms. Having fully seen the suffering of samsara, to abandon it, cultivate the path of truth, abandoning the two faults, this is the conduct of peace. All of these should be accepted, they are limbs of the path of renunciation. Realizing that all dharmas are emptiness, the stream of compassion flows to beings. Limitless skillful means of practice, is the practice of supreme renunciation. First of all, it is like this, meaningless deception. Without attachment to worldly dharmas, dwell in secluded places such as forests. The nature of mind is primordially unborn, it is a naturally occurring solitary place, but for sentient beings who are beginners, first rely on external solitary places. After that, seek the solitary place of the nature of mind itself. Relying on the seed of the essence of enlightenment, accomplish this great meaning in this way. First of all, the immeasurable mind, on the ground of equanimity, spread it out well, with the stream of loving-kindness, in all aspects, the yogi who is extremely joyful, plant the seed of compassion well. Open the sky of view, skillfully generate the sprout of bodhicitta. Diligently seek the harvest of accomplishments, with unattached wisdom, give to all. With the fan of generosity, fan well, speak with pleasant words, subdue with meaningful words, and be sure to have a great discussion of meaningful practice.
