A Commentary on the Treatise Called "Parts of Limbs." Āryadeva. A Commentary on the Treatise Called "Parts of Limbs." Āryadeva. In Sanskrit: Hastavāsanāmāpakaraṇīvṛtti. In Tibetan: A Commentary on the Treatise Called "Parts of Limbs." Homage to the noble Mañjuśrī Jñānasattva. In order to fully understand even the mere conventions of the three realms as the true meaning, and for the sake of those sentient beings who have not comprehended the meaning of Suchness, by means of thoroughly distinguishing the nature of phenomena, this is composed in order to correctly establish unerring knowledge. On a rope, one apprehends a snake; seeing the rope, it is meaningless. Here, in a place where the light is not very bright, when a faint light appears, one mistakes the shape of the rope as a common characteristic, and a consciousness arises that definitely grasps, "This is definitely a snake." This is because one has not comprehended its own nature. When one definitely grasps its characteristics, it becomes a mere delusion because it is elaborated by pervasive conceptualization in a way that is not as it is. Therefore, that consciousness also becomes a meaningless, deluded consciousness. Seeing its parts, even that, like the consciousness of a snake, is a delusion. When that rope is divided into parts and examined, the rope's own nature is not seen. If it is not seen, then seeing the rope is just like the thought, "It is a snake," it is merely a delusion. Furthermore, just as there is delusion in knowing the rope, similarly, those parts also, when relying on segments and strands, etc., do not definitely grasp their own nature. Because they are not definitely grasped, it is merely a delusion, like a mind with an appearance focused on that. In all objects of examination, when examining their own nature, in conventional truth, with consciousness, whatever objects are examined are examined. Just as when ropes, etc., are examined with distinctions such as parts, etc., their own nature is not seen, and the consciousness of ropes, etc., is a delusion, just like the thought, "It is a snake," similarly, all the objects of conventional consciousness, such as pots and bowls, etc., which exist in dependence on surface parts, etc., are examined as existing. If those are thoroughly divided in the end, then for the time being, pots, etc., are considered as conventions.

It is only so. The so-called "other" refers to the ultimate truth itself. Because it cannot be analyzed, the ultimate is also like non-existence. The ultimate of all things that can be analyzed, that single indivisible atom, also cannot be observed due to its own nature that cannot be analyzed. Like garlands of sky flowers and rabbit horns, etc., therefore, it is also established as a non-existent thing. If someone asks, how can it be known by the characteristic and reason of being unanalyzable that the atom does not exist and is not unique? Because if it exists, there will be different directional parts. For example, existing things like vases, blankets, and vehicles have different directional parts such as east, west, top, and bottom, so different parts appear. If atoms also exist, then it must be admitted that there are parts such as east, west, north, and top. If there are different parts, then the atom cannot be established as one. Because the classification of things appears many, oneness does not exist. Since atoms cannot be observed, please abandon this talk of atoms. Therefore, the wise are merely deluded, do not regard it as the true meaning to observe. Because it is so, the three realms are merely delusions, so the wise who want to obtain skillfulness should not regard this as the true meaning to observe. If someone thinks that external objects such as vases are true because they exist through imputation from non-existence because their own nature cannot be recognized. There is a delusion with the appearance of focusing on these things, for example, although illusions and Gandharva cities do not exist, there is knowledge with the appearance of focusing on them. If you think so and are confused, then that is also incorrect. Because the way it appears is not like that, how can a meaningless appearance become its nature? If delusion also exists by the self-nature of things, then the thing itself does not exist in that way. If the thing does not exist, then even with self-nature it cannot function, so it is incorrect. Because it is incorrect, the nature of delusion also exists in that way.
