Explanation of the Essence of Dependent Arising Ārya Nāgārjuna Explanation of the Essence of Dependent Arising Ārya Nāgārjuna In Sanskrit: Pratītyasamutpāda hṛdaya vyākhyāna. In Tibetan: Explanation of the Essence of Dependent Arising. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Here, a virtuous student who wishes to listen, possessing the ability to listen, retain, comprehend, contemplate, and dispel doubts, comes to the teacher and, starting from the teachings of the Tathāgata, asks this: "Bhagavan, what are the twelve distinct limbs here? How should those dependent arisings spoken by the Sage be summarized? I wish to hear." The teacher, recognizing that he is asking about the very nature of those dharmas, says this: "Afflictions, actions, and suffering, are completely included in these three." He speaks with clear and detailed words. Therein, ten and two are twelve. A limb is itself a distinction, therefore it is a distinct limb, like the limbs of a chariot, showing the parts that have become limbs. He who possesses body, speech, and mind is the Sage. What is spoken by the Sage belongs to the category of teachings and explanations. It does not arise from causes such as nature, certainty, a person, dependence on others, power, time, essence, will, divine appointment, or jina, but this is dependent arising. These twelve limbs, in afflictions, actions, and suffering, rely on each other, and like an arrow house, they are completely included in these three. "Completely" means "without remainder." Question: What are the afflictions? What are the actions? What is suffering? How should these distinctions of dependence be summarized? Answer: The first, eighth, and ninth are afflictions. The first of the twelve limbs is ignorance, the eighth is craving, and the ninth is grasping; these three should be known as afflictions. What is action? The second and tenth are action; the second is formation.

Da. The tenth is existence. These two dharmas should be known as karma. The remaining seven are also suffering. The difference between afflictions and what is categorized as karma, those remaining seven differences, should be known to be categorized as suffering, namely: consciousness, name, form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, birth, aging, and death. Furthermore, the word 'also' means to gather, separation from pleasure and union with displeasure, and the suffering of not obtaining what is desired, etc., are suffering. The twelve dharmas are gathered into three. Therefore, these twelve dharmas should be known as karma, afflictions, and suffering. The word 'is' signifies the meaning of determining the remainder, that is, the dharmas taught in the sutras are limited to these, and there is nothing else besides them, this is the determination. Question: If that is the case, please explain from where these afflictions, karma, and suffering arise. Answer: From the three, two arise. From the three afflictions, the two called karma arise. From the two, seven arise, which are those previously mentioned called suffering. From the seven, three also arise, which are those called afflictions. Again, from those three afflictions, the two karmas arise, which is the wheel of existence. Itself revolves again and again. Existence is of three types: the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. Within them, unwillingly becoming a wheel of cyclic existence, this world of individual beings wanders everywhere. The word 'is' indicates the meaning of uncertainty, just as the wheel turns in sequence, it is not certain that it arises in the realms of existence, but rather indicates uncertainty. Question: Then, what is meant by the sentient being who is the lord of all bodies? What is his action like? Answer: All beings are causes and effects. Apart from imputation, there is no sentient being here. Here, there is accurate examination, not just in the manner of examination. That which exists only in examination cannot be substantially existent. Question: If that is so, then from this world to that world
