The Treatise on Reasoning: Sixty Stanzas. By the venerable Nagarjuna. The Treatise on Reasoning: Sixty Stanzas. By the venerable Nagarjuna. In Sanskrit: Yuktisastika-karika-nama. In Tibetan: The Treatise on Reasoning: Sixty Stanzas. Homage to youthful Manjushri! Whose birth and cessation, are abandoned by this method, To the one who taught dependent arising, I pay homage to that capable one. Who, with wisdom of existence and non-existence, has transcended and does not abide, Those ones understand the meaning of conditions, the profound and aimless, in various ways. For a while, the source of all faults, Having completely refuted non-existence, Listen to how existence itself, And its reversal, are transformed by reasoning. Just as children make distinctions, If things were to become truly real, Then by that unreality, into liberation, What reason is there for anyone not to want it? By existence, one is not liberated, By non-existence, it is not other than this existence. By fully knowing existence and non-existence, The great self is completely liberated. Those who have not seen that very thing are proud of samsara and nirvana, Those who have seen that very thing are not proud of samsara and nirvana. Samsara and nirvana, these two are not existent. Fully knowing samsara itself, is said to be knowing nirvana. When things that have arisen are destroyed, Just as one contemplates how to stop them, Likewise, the noble ones also, Accept cessation as if it were an illusion. Cessation occurs through destruction, Not through fully knowing conditioned things. To whom will that become manifest? How can one who knows destruction become that? If the aggregates have not ceased, Even if the afflictions are exhausted, one will not become liberated. When they have ceased here, At that time, one will become liberated. Having seen with correct wisdom, That which arises from the condition of ignorance, Whether it is birth or cessation, Nothing at all will become an object of focus. That very thing is nirvana in this life, Extinguished and the task accomplished. If, after knowing the Dharma, There is a distinction in this, Even in the most subtle of things, Whoever Distinguishes arising, That one who is unskilled, Has not seen the meaning of arising from conditions. If a bhikshu whose afflictions are exhausted, has rebirth

If it were the opposite, why would the perfectly enlightened Buddhas not explain its creation? If there is creation, it is certain that one will also completely grasp onto views. What comes into being through dependent arising, what is before and what is after for it? If it is said to arise first, then how can it be reversed from the later? Being free from the extremes of before and after, existence appears like an illusion. When does the illusion arise? Or when will it be destroyed? Those who know illusion are not deluded there. Those who do not know illusion are completely attached. Those who see existence as being like mirages and illusions with their minds, will not be confused by views of the past or future. Those who analyze arising and ceasing in conditioned things, do not understand the movement of the wheel of dependent arising. Whatever arises in dependence on that and that, is not born from its own essence. If it is not born from its own essence, how can it be said to be born? Quiescence from the exhaustion of causes is considered exhaustion. If something is not exhausted by its own nature, how can it be called exhausted? Therefore, nothing is born, and nothing will cease. The actions of birth and death are taught for the sake of necessary purposes. By knowing birth, one knows death. By knowing death, one knows impermanence. By knowing how to enter into the nature of impermanence, one also realizes the sacred Dharma. Those who understand dependent arising as being free from arising and ceasing have crossed the ocean of existence, which is like a shore. Ordinary individuals with a sense of self as a real entity are confused about existence and non-existence. Those who are controlled by faults and afflictions are deceived by their own minds. Those who are skilled in reality see reality as impermanent, deceptive, accumulating and empty, selfless, and as being solitary. There is no place to stay, there is no object, there is no root, and there is no dwelling place. It arises from the cause of ignorance, and it is completely free from beginning, middle, and end. Like a water tree, it has no essence. It is like a city of gandharvas, a city of delusion that is unbearable. Existence appears like an illusion. In this world, such as Brahma, whatever appears to be true is said to be false to the noble ones. What other view remains besides this? The world is blinded by ignorance.
