Chapter Three. Chapter Three. Understanding the causes of the arising of all paths, knowing the nature of all, as well as the reasons, opposing factors, antidotes, paths, limbs of the paths, and the proximate causes. Among these, since one cannot understand the later ones without understanding the nature of oneself, therefore, briefly speaking, it is called the basis of all, and so on. With love and wisdom, understanding the nature of permanence and annihilation, as well as the nature of samsara and nirvana and the interval between them, knowing all the natures of dwelling in these and being free from these, therefore, for the Shravakas and others who are separated from that nature, it is impossible to realize even a part of the Perfection of Wisdom, which refers to the meaning of the scriptures at the time of the Omniscient One, and so on. If there is no difference in omniscience, then how can the Perfection of Wisdom exist and not exist? In order to dispel the doubts of those with inferior intelligence, secondly, the difference in causes is explained, that is, the rules and so on. Understanding the nature of form and so on is understanding the equality of all dharmas, and by abandoning the knowledge of things with and without substance, the attachment to form and so on will change, otherwise it will not change. Therefore, it is related to the skillful means of following and reversing, and if it reverses, then it is the reversal itself. Therefore, for the Shravakas and others, there is no realization of the equality of all dharmas. Since there are no real things that become opposing factors and antidotes, the real things of cause and effect that exist in the relative truth distinguish them. If this is the case, even if one enters emptiness and so on with the antidote of the self and what belongs to me, etc., which are imputed by others, since there is still attachment, it is still an opposing factor. When a Bodhisattva himself enters into generosity and so on without arrogance, it is an antidote to make others also definitely combine in the same way, because there is no attachment. In general, since attachment is an opposing factor, attachment to the Tathagatas and so on is also an opposing factor.

Therefore, realizing that all things encompassed by the two aggregates of knowledge and knowable have the same nature is the antidote to it. Thus, clinging to appearances such as impermanence and the Tathagata is a means of completely pacifying all afflictions. Although it is the antidote to permanence and so on, since it is the nature of the obscuration of the knowable, it is abandoned by those who do not perceive all phenomena and who know the same nature. Therefore, each of the opposing sides and antidotes in terms of characteristics also has two aspects. This is the meaning: when focusing on impermanence and the Tathagata, if those are taken as characteristics by the antidote to permanence and so on, and by the causes of the accumulation of merit, then they become the opposing side. However, since all phenomena are unborn, whatever becomes an antidote is not an opposing side of anything. At the time of definite realization through formless yoga, then that Bodhisattva is the antidote. Since abandoning the opposing side with the antidote also transforms from the path, it is reasonable to speak of the path, but since the result depends on the cause, a description of the various distinctions and a small portion of the aspects of the cause of the path is what is meant by "after describing the opposing side and so on." This is what is being said: for form and feeling, etc., by examining the characteristics such as being corruptible and impermanence, etc., there is extreme fear of emptiness, etc., and incompleteness and completeness; for non-attachment, there is no trust; for immutability, there is momentariness; for non-agent, there is agency; for the nature of omniscience, there is the prevention of what should be done; and for the nature of the path knowledge, there is the difficulty of practice; and for the nature of all-knowing, there are the three difficulties of action. Obtaining emptiness and dependent origination and the nature of complete nirvana, etc., and obtaining the results of stream-enterer and so on, is the nature of particularly admiring emptiness, and not being moved by other conditions.
