Then, the venerable Subhuti addressed the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva newly entered into the Great Vehicle hears this teaching, will he not be discouraged, completely discouraged, and regretful? Will he not be afraid, completely afraid, and overcome by complete fear? The Blessed One replied: Shariputra, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva newly entered into the Great Vehicle practices the Perfection of Wisdom without skillful means and is not guided by a virtuous friend, then he will be afraid, completely afraid, and overcome by fear. Subhuti inquired: Blessed One, by practicing what will one not be afraid, not be completely afraid, and not be overcome by complete fear? What are the skillful means of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with a mind endowed with the knowledge of all aspects, he separately contemplates that form is impermanent, but does not fixate on it. With a mind endowed with the knowledge of all aspects, he separately contemplates that feeling is impermanent, but does not fixate on it.
