Instructions on Practice. Instructions on Practice. After speaking thus, the venerable Shariputra addressed the Blessed One, saying: "Lord, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice the Perfection of Wisdom?" After he had spoken, the Blessed One addressed the venerable Shariputra, saying: "Shariputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, although the Bodhisattva exists, he does not truly see the Bodhisattva. He does not truly see the name of the Bodhisattva. He does not truly see enlightenment. He does not truly see the Perfection of Wisdom. He does not truly see the name of the Perfection of Wisdom. He does not truly see the act of practicing. He does not truly see the act of not practicing. He does not truly see the act of practicing as practicing, nor of not practicing as not practicing. He does not truly see the act of neither practicing nor not practicing. He does not truly see form. Likewise, he does not truly see feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. Why is that? Shariputra, thus, the Bodhisattva is empty of the nature of the Bodhisattva. The name of the Bodhisattva is also empty of the name of the Bodhisattva. Why is that? Its nature is such that form is not empty by emptiness. Feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are not empty by emptiness. Why is that? Whatever is the emptiness of form is not form. Whatever is the emptiness of feeling is not feeling. Whatever is the emptiness of perception is not perception. Whatever is the emptiness of mental formations is not mental formations. Whatever is the emptiness of consciousness is not consciousness. Emptiness is not apart from form, feeling,

There is no emptiness other than form. There is no emptiness other than feeling. There is no emptiness other than perception. There is no emptiness other than formations. There is no emptiness other than consciousness. Why is that? Form itself is emptiness. Feeling itself is emptiness. Perception itself is emptiness. Formations themselves are emptiness. Consciousness itself is emptiness. Emptiness itself is form. Emptiness itself is feeling. Emptiness itself is perception. Emptiness itself is formations. Emptiness itself is consciousness. Why is that? For example, the term "Bodhisattva" is just a name. For example, the term "Perfection of Wisdom" is just a name. For example, the terms "form," "feeling," "perception," "formations," and "consciousness" are just names. For example, form is like an illusion. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are like an illusion. Illusion is also just a name; it does not exist in a place, nor does it exist in a direction. Seeing an illusion is like seeing something that is separate from suchness. Intrinsic nature is without arising, without ceasing, without defilement, without purification. Thus, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom does not truly see arising in any dharma, nor does he truly see ceasing, nor does he truly see defilement, nor does he truly see purification. Why is that? Because names are artificial constructs applied to individual dharmas, and these are also imputed; names are terms that are casually applied. All those names are not truly seen by a Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom. Because they are not truly seen, he does not cling to them. Shariputra, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he completely understands in this way: for example, the term "Bodhisattva" is just a name. For example,

Bodhi, this is just a name. For example, Prajñāpāramitā, this is just a name. For example, form, this is just a name. For example, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, these are just names. Shariputra, for example, I say "I, I," this is just a term, but there is actually no "I." Not a sentient being, not a life, not a nourisher, not a person, not an individual, not born of power, the son of power is invisible, because invisibility is emptiness. Why? Because the Bodhisattva does not truly cling to anything. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices in this way is practicing in Prajñāpāramitā. Shariputra, if this entire Jambudvipa were filled with monks like Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, for example, like a reed thicket, a sugarcane thicket, a molasses tree thicket, a bamboo forest, a rice field, or a sesame field, then their wisdom would not even come close to one hundredth part of the wisdom of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices in Prajñāpāramitā and meditates for one day. Not even one thousandth part, one millionth part, one hundred millionth part, whether in number, part, calculation, reason, or metaphor. Shariputra, the wisdom of a Bodhisattva who practices in Prajñāpāramitā in this way, meditating for one day, overwhelms the wisdom of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Why? Shariputra, because the wisdom of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva exists for the purpose of completely liberating all sentient beings from suffering, but the wisdom of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is not like that. Shariputra, let alone Jambudvipa being filled with monks like Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, Shariputra, if the three thousand great thousand worlds were filled with monks like Shariputra
