The Fifty Verses on the Guru, by Asvaghosa. The Fifty Verses on the Guru. By Asvaghosa. In Sanskrit: Guru Pañcāśikā. In Tibetan: Lama Nga Chupa (The Fifty Verses on the Guru). Homage to the Bhagavan Vajrasattva! That which becomes the cause for obtaining the state of glorious Vajrasattva. Having paid homage to the lotus feet of the Guru as they are. This explanation, which is spoken from the stainless tantras. Please listen with respect to this concise explanation. The Vajra of the supreme empowerment. The Tathagata is the Guru. Since he dwells in the realms of the ten directions. I prostrate to him with devotion in the three times. With supreme faith in the three times. With mandala and flowers, with folded hands. Serving and honoring the teacher, the Guru. I prostrate to his feet with my head. For a householder or a novice monk. In order to abandon worldly scorn. Having arranged the sacred Dharma and so forth in front. By holding to asceticism, pay homage with devotion. Offering a seat, rising, and so forth. And serving and honoring with meaningful actions. All should be done by one who holds to asceticism. Abandon homage that is not virtuous. Since the Guru and the disciple. Equally break their vows. The hero should first examine the Guru. And the relationship of the disciple. A wise disciple should not take as a Guru one who is. Without compassion, angry, and cruel. Arrogant, attached, and untamed, and so forth. And with deceit and so forth. Stable, disciplined, and intelligent. Patience, honest, and without deceit. Knowing the union of mantra and tantra. Loving, and skilled in treatises. Completely knowing those ten qualities. Skilled in the activities of inquiring about mandalas. Knowing the union of explaining mantras. Extremely peaceful and with tamed senses. Having contemplated such a protector. After becoming a disciple, if one despises him. Then one has despised all the Buddhas. Therefore, one will always obtain suffering. That one who reviles the Guru. Will be afflicted by plagues and harmful diseases. And by demons, epidemics, and poisons. That great fool will die. Kings, fire, venomous snakes. Water, dakinis, thieves. Demons and misleading influences and so forth. Having been killed, sentient beings will go to hell. One should never. Disturb the minds of the Gurus. If one does so out of ignorance. Then one will certainly be tormented in hell. In the unbearable hells such as Avici.

What is the place of reliance? Those who revile the teacher, It is truly said that they dwell there. Therefore, with all effort, The wise Vajra Master, Virtuous qualities should not be criticized, Never should be slandered. To the Lama, be respectful, Offer in accordance. By this, harms such as epidemics, Will be eliminated, will not occur. One's own Samaya teacher, Even if it is uncharitable sons and wives, Even one's own life should be relied upon, What need to mention fluctuating enjoyments? Because hundreds of thousands of millions of eons, Even countless are difficult to obtain, Buddhahood itself, for the diligent, Is given in this very life. Always guard one's own Samaya, Always worship the Tathagata, Always offer to the Lama as well, This is the same as all Buddhas. Inexhaustible, with desirable objects, Whatever is slightly pleasing, Especially excellent, That and that should be given to the Lama. Giving that, to all the Buddhas, It always becomes an offering. Giving that is a collection of merit, From the collection, supreme accomplishment arises. Therefore, disciples should abandon stinginess, Possessing the qualities of discipline and patience. The teacher and the Vajra Holder, Should not be regarded as different. Fearing the sin of destroying a stupa, Even the shadow should not be stepped on, What need to mention shoes, cushions, and mounts, It goes without saying that they should not be stepped on. With great wisdom and joyful mind, Diligently listen to the Lama's words, What cannot be done with reason, For what cannot be done, purify with words. From the Lama, accomplishments, And heaven and happiness are obtained. Therefore, with all effort, Do not transgress the Lama's words. The Lama's possessions are like life, The Lama's suffering is also like the Lama. His retinue is like relatives, Always think with equanimity. Bedding, cushions, sitting, and going ahead, Hair knots and hangings, Putting feet on the cushion, on the waist, Putting hands on the side should not be done. When the Lamas stand up, One should not lie down or sit. Always for his activities, Be skilled in rising, perfectly complete. Throwing away saliva and so on, Putting feet on the cushion and stretching, Walking and arguing, speaking, Should not be done in front of the Lama. Massaging limbs and dances, Singing and music should not be done.
