Fifth Chapter: Explanation of Union Fifth Chapter: Explanation of Union In order to show the fifth chapter immediately after the fourth, causes and effects, etc., are mentioned. The cause is the father of the Bhagavan. The fruit is the Tathagata. The nature of Vajradhara is the very nature of cause and effect. Therefore, he is the protector, the savior of the three worlds. Having prostrated to him, I shall explain the final stage called union. Abandoning the attachment to samsara and liberation, the mind becomes one, which is called union. "Dual" means two equals. Because of entering through it, it is called union. From the nature of all defilements and purifications, realizing the form of ultimate truth, these becoming one is also union. Discriminating and clinging to samsara is also a form with appearance, because by its power, all defilements will increase. The opposite of that is non-discrimination. Abandoning discrimination and practicing in oneness, that itself is the experience of union. Where there is no activity of the mind of the duality of grasper and grasped, and where there is indivisibility, that is also called union. "Permanent" means the side of permanence. "Cessation" means the side of the world of nihilism. Abandoning the minds of these two, whoever realizes that very equality is the wise one, not others. As it is said: The great self is without dispute, it has no faction. Why? Because it has no other faction and self-faction. Furthermore: All things of beings, are delightful when unexamined, but when examined and destroyed, things do not exist. Examining all dharmas as being without self-nature is wisdom, and thinking of all beings as being free from the nature of suffering is compassion. Again, when one examines the meaning of sentient beings with wisdom, without difference from oneself, and enters into what

Ma (嘛) means that the Bhagavan possesses a realm of extremely profound wisdom. Having comprehended the nature of skillful means and wisdom, the essence of stability and movement, and also that which relies and abides in one direction, that is called union. As it is said: Whoever relies on wisdom itself and relies on compassion for conventionality, therefore, for beings, there are no sentient beings, and they truly contemplate the meaning. When is the time when compassion, which generates the ten powers, seizes them? At that time, you contemplate beings like a father contemplating his only child. So it is said. The remainder is called the aggregates of afflictions, and abiding with them is called abiding with remainder. The opposite of that is called without remainder. The opposite of that is called without conceptualization. Where the essence of those two conceptualizations is not present, that is union. Where the distinction between the selflessness of the person and the selflessness of phenomena is abandoned, that is also union. Having understood the order of self-blessing and entering into luminosity, and those themselves become mixed in the state of the Middle Way, that is union. Completely grasping everything in the state of emptiness, entering through the order of subsequent entry, and by the power of intention, whatever arises from that, and union. Initially, having known the distinction between the nature of conventional and ultimate truth, and at that time, the two aspects become mixed and are, that is union. Where there is no object of focus on emptiness and there is no arising from it, that is union. That itself is the path of the Middle Way state for yogis. Abandoning the two conceptualizations of sleeping and waking is said to be shown as the nature of union, for the sake of showing it to all sentient beings. Sleeping means not engaging in the benefit of sentient beings. Waking means engaging in the benefit of sentient beings. Having completely abandoned those, and spontaneously accomplishing self-realization, perfectly accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings, that is the meaning of that. As it is said: Like a wish-fulfilling jewel, completely fulfilling the intentions of all beings, by the power of the merit of sentient beings, then wide

One can see the light of salt. Thus it is said. Samadhi is the state of a peaceful mind. Non-samadhi is the state of a distracted mind. A yogi who is without these two should be known to abide in union. Object is attachment to the apprehended object. Absence of object is the complete purification of wrong views. Abandoning these is union. Non-memory is forgetting the meaning of what has been heard. Memory is the opposite of that. Because of constant spontaneous accomplishment, one is definitely liberated from them. Therefore, it is the nature of constant arising, thus it means abiding in all places as desired. Attachment is clinging to the enjoyments of existence. Non-attachment is absence of clinging. Having completely abandoned both of these extremes, focusing on the Middle Way, abiding in samsara for as long as it lasts is stability. As it is said: "Whoever, with great compassion, abides by the power of others." Thus it is said. The body of supreme joy is the state of constant and extreme joy. Whoever has such a body is endowed with it. As it is said: "The world is boundless, with great compassion, skillfully discerning, constantly rejoicing for sentient beings, gradually causing them to mature." Thus it is said. Furthermore, if sentient beings are liberated, who is the ocean of joy, therefore it is definitely complete, what is the use of liberation without bondage? Thus it is said. Cause is that which greatly produces effect, that which is capable of producing effect is cause. Effect is that which arises from cause. Having realized that these two are inseparable, making it the nature of inseparability, wherever the yogi abides, that is union. Wherever one realizes the two stages as one and inseparable, that is also union. Abandoning the discrimination between completely pure deities and completely impure deities, wherever one realizes non-duality, that is union. "Having form" refers to the form aggregate. The other four are formless, having completely abandoned these two discriminations that are commonly held, whoever knows the state of equality, that one attains the state of union.
