The first chapter, explaining the basis of complete physical seclusion. The first chapter, explaining the basis of complete physical seclusion. In Sanskrit: Maha Vajradharo Mathakramopadesha Amrita Guhya. In Tibetan: The Secret Nectar, the Oral Instructions on the Stages of the Path of the Great Vajradhara. Homage to glorious Vajrasattva! May I realize perfect enlightenment, the great bliss, the samadhi like a vajra, the embodiment of the five wisdoms. I pay homage to Vajradhara. The sacred Dharma, like a lotus, the flawless teacher Vajradhara, the second is the family of Vairochana, I bow to the jewel that first appeared. The oral instructions of all the Tathagatas, the lineage of the Lamas, descending in dreams, like meeting a treasure of jewels. Fearing the danger of change, and the freedom of secret wisdom, for the sake of the disciple who is to be initiated with compassion, therefore I write. Therefore, from the arising and the body transformed from the arising, transforming into obtaining the wisdom body of the Great Vajradhara, there are three paths: first, the stages of the path of generating the mind, second, the stages of the path of newly entering the vehicle, and the stages of the path of the yogi. The stages of the path of generating the mind have six aspects: pleasing the noble virtuous friend, receiving empowerment and listening to the sacred Dharma, friendly companions, the practice of offerings, and harmonious places. The stages of the path of newly entering the vehicle have four aspects: the samadhi of great compassion, the samadhi of the command wheel, the samadhi of the protection wheel, and the samadhi of emptiness. The stages of the path of yoga have two aspects: the common path and the supreme path. The common path is the four vajras. The supreme path is the six branches. Thus, in the later part of the Great Yoga Tantra, the Glorious Guhyasamaja Tantra, it is said: By the difference of common and supreme, the method of practice becomes two types. The common is the four vajras, the supreme is the six branches. Thus it is said. What are the four vajras? In that same tantra it says: First is emptiness, great bodhi, second is the arising of the seed, third is the completion of all forms.

is the fourth placing of letters. These four vajras are the method of common practice. Thus it is said. They refer to the four, recitation, near practice, practice, and great practice, which are said in order. How is that said? Like this, from the arising of the earth element to the contemplation of the true mandala, it is called recitation because it is focused on bodhicitta and recited. Before the three, near practice and so on, one contemplates the true mandala, so it is also said to be the initial emptiness of bodhicitta. From the arising to the generation of the samaya-being of the great Vajradhara, it is called near practice because it is practiced and generated. After the recitation, the body of the deity arises from the cause of the three syllables, so it is also said that the second seed arises. Placing the body of the great Vajradhara, Vairochana, on the crown of the head, to the contemplation of the samadhi-being, it is called practice because it accomplishes one's own benefit. After the near practice, the body of Vajradhara that should be contemplated, is the complete body of the deity, so it is also said that the third form is completely perfect. From the initial union to the ultimate of supreme action, it is called great practice because it accomplishes the great meaning of other beings. After the practice, it is introduced into the mandala of mantra, so it is also said that it is the fourth placing of letters. What are the six limbs? It is also said in that tantra: Each gathering and meditation, and life force, likewise holding and, recollection and samadhi, are called the six limbs of union. Thus it is said. Those are also explained in that tantra: Of the ten faculties, in all their respective realms, because of gathering desires individually, it is called individual gathering. The five desires, in brief, by uniting with the five Buddhas, examination is called meditation. Meditation changes into five, investigation and analysis and joy, likewise bliss and, the mind is one-pointed, the five are gathered there as meditation. The three secrets arise.
