Chapter Five: Abridged Cutting of Doubts Regarding the Differentiation of the Limits of Karma Chapter Five: Abridged Cutting of Doubts Regarding the Differentiation of the Limits of Karma The Vajra disciple requested: Blessed One, I would also like to ask about various different consciousnesses. Blessed One, if the appearance of the three consciousnesses is formless, and the wind element is also formless, and karma is also formless, then there is no mutual understanding between these. Blessed One, you have spoken of emptiness in the words of the scriptures. So how is it that good and bad karma have bound the body of the mind's nature since beginningless samsara? Similarly, if the good and bad of these one hundred and sixty natures are accumulated, and they themselves arise and perish in an instant, then how do they repeatedly point to the next world? Or do those good and bad arise from other places? Or do they arise from the habits of one's own mind? I beseech the Blessed One, the Vajra Acharya Teacher, to dispel these doubts of mine. The Vajra Acharya said: Great being, well done, well done! Fully understanding the purity of karma is very profound and is the realm of the Buddhas. Son of lineage, this is not for beginners and those who speak of karma. Therefore, the purity of karma should be understood separately by scripture and reason, and listen diligently with great effort. First, the characteristics of good and bad karma must be established. Among them are the paths of the ten virtuous actions and, conversely, the paths of the ten non-virtuous actions. The Blessed One said in the Vajradhatu Sutra that these paths of action arise from body, speech, and mind, so one should follow them. The Blessed One said: Secret Lord, listen! The misdeeds of the body are of three kinds, the misdeeds of speech are of four kinds, and the misdeeds of mind are of three kinds, and these will cause beings to fall into evil destinies. Vajrapani Bodhisattva requested: The bodily

The various distinctions of bodily misconduct and verbal misconduct, and how many kinds of mental misconduct there are, I beseech the Blessed One to explain. I beseech the Sugata to explain. The Blessed One said: Secret Lord, misconduct itself is heavy and ordinary. Among them, killing and beating parents, teachers, and so on, are heavy misconduct. Killing and other non-virtuous paths of action are ordinary misconduct. What is verbal misconduct? Speaking words that abandon the sacred Dharma is itself the speech of verbal misconduct, and speaking evil words to parents, teachers, and so on, is heavy verbal misconduct. Some people, when others are diligently practicing and doing good deeds, say grand words such as "There is no afterlife," speaking such transcendent lies, obstructing virtuous deeds, and speaking frivolous words, sowing discord, and speaking of non-virtuous deeds are ordinary verbal misconduct. Mental misconduct is: first of all, ignorance, whose nature is the mental misconduct of the mind's nature, and the misconduct of the nature of mental factors, and the misconduct of the nature of ignorance. Vajrapani asked: Please, Blessed One, explain the misconduct of mind and mental factors and ignorance. The Sugata explained. The Blessed One said: Secret Lord, listen! Extreme hatred and non-attachment, and non-attachment to the ten virtuous paths of action, this is mental misconduct. Pride, arrogance, conceit, anger, destroying sentient beings, and with a mind of desire coveting another's wife, stealing another's property, and harboring deceit and extreme hatred towards the teacher, this is the misconduct of mental factors. Abandoning and forgetting the ten virtuous paths of action and the six perfections, and being indecisive.

Because the mother's face and mind are extremely ignorant, it is the ordinary wrongdoing of ignorance. Like this, not knowing that these are the wrongdoings of body, speech, and mind, and not understanding the self-nature of appearance, the self-nature of the movement of wind, thinking "This is my body, this is my speech, this is my mind," clinging to self, harboring self-attachment, and doing good and bad deeds, one will be extremely inclined to good and bad destinies. Those with wisdom who realize the emptiness of mind through the order of self-nature appearance do not think about or realize the good and bad deeds of body, speech, and mind. Why? Because the self-nature of good and bad arises universally from the three emptinesses, and by the power of the movement of wind, they arise and cease in an instant, and after experiencing various realms, they will again merge into the light. As it is said in the 《Supreme Profound View》: Just as clouds are various, with different colors and shapes, arising from the sky, and then dissolving in that very sky. Similarly, all self-natures are the cause of the three appearances, and after completely entering the realm, they will merge into the light. Because they do not understand such self-nature, those covered by the darkness of ignorance, having done good and bad deeds, will wander in the five realms. Having committed the five heinous crimes, they will suffer in hell and other places. Having done good deeds such as giving, they will enjoy offerings in the heavens and other pure realms. Countless thousands of rebirths, thinking "This is truly obtained, this is the ripening of past karma," ignorant people grieve. Through the way of self-nature appearance, whoever can liberate beings from afflictions, knowing this, the wise will be liberated from the prison of existence. Thus it is said. In order to clarify this meaning, in the sutra requested by the king of humans or non-humans, Tree, it is also said: The actions of the mind are uncreated, not form, and from the perspective of suchness, even wind is unobstructed, knowing the mind-nature of all worlds, that is completely pure, so it is impossible for afflictions to arise. Again
