Because it has own-being, it is also non-existent. Because there is no agent, the action is also without substance. It is said in the sutra that the aggregate of formation is empty, with the substance of the aggregate of formation being empty, so the aggregate of formation is not completely established. The aggregate of consciousness is also not completely established, because the aggregate of consciousness itself is eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, mind consciousness, etc. Those such as eye consciousness also do not ascertain their own nature individually. Why? Because eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and form, and does not arise without the eye and form. If there is no eye and form, how will eye consciousness arise? Thus, for the time being, eye consciousness is not completely established. By the same reasoning, ear, nose, tongue, and body consciousness are also the same. Mind consciousness is the basis of all past and future dharmas, how can past and future dharmas become the cause for generating mind consciousness? The Bhagavan said that the past has ceased, ceasing together with it, and the future has not yet been attained, and what arises now together with consciousness also does not exist. It is said in the sutra that the aggregate of consciousness is also empty of the aggregate of consciousness, so the aggregate of consciousness is also not completely established. Thus, since the aggregates have already been shown as realms and sources, there is no need to separately refute them, just as there is no sprout without a seed, the own-being of the aggregates does not exist, and thereby it is also established that their own-being does not exist. Therefore, the mind is called separate from the aggregates, realms, and sources. Grasping and the grasped are completely abandoned. This is what the perfectly complete Buddha said in the Secret Sutra of the Profoundly Departed: the mind has not seen the colors of blue, yellow, red, green, crystal, or silver, nor has it seen shapes such as long, short, round, triangular, or square, nor has it seen the shapes of male, female, and hermaphrodite. Secret Lord, the mind is not the nature of the desire realm, nor is it the nature of the form realm.

It is not the nature of the formless realm. From the nature of beings such as gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans, it is said up to "it cannot be found even if searched in every way." Thus, for the time being, the mind is not the object to be grasped. How it is not the grasper should be explained as follows: Thus, the Blessed One, secret lord, the mind is not inside, nor outside, nor in between the two. Why is that? Secret lord, because the mind is completely pure by nature. Therefore, how can that which cannot be found even if searched in every way become the object to be grasped and the grasper? Thus, the mind is said to be free from the object to be grasped and the grasper. The equality of things without self. It means that just as all aggregates and so on are without self, so is the mind. Thus, the Blessed One said that just as all dharmas are empty, so is the mind of the nature of emptiness. Just as all dharmas are without self, so is the mind of the nature of selflessness. All dharmas are solitary; likewise, the mind is also of the nature of solitude. Therefore, because of the equality of things without self, the mind is equal, therefore one's own mind is unborn from the beginning. Therefore, it is the nature of emptiness. What is the nature of emptiness? Emptiness is the nature of space. Thus it is said, space is empty. All dharmas are of the nature of space. Enlightenment is also of that nature. The mind is also of that nature. Thus it is said. Similarly, space is without nature, it is just a name. Similarly, the mind is also without nature, it is just a name. Whoever understands that the mind is neither born nor ceases, that is enlightenment. Thus, the Blessed One said, what is enlightenment? It is to fully know the true state of the mind as it is, that is unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Secret lord, there is no subtle dharma, and there is no object, therefore it is unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment.

The ground is stated. Why? Enlightenment is the nature of space; there is no perceiver or thing to be perceived. Why? Because enlightenment is the nature of space. Therefore, whoever knows their own mind as it truly is, with a loving method: Alas, how sad! These beings are suffering. These beings, other than the nature of their own mind, are possessed by the demon of false and inverted thoughts. They experience various sufferings in samsara. How will they realize the nature of their own mind? I must strive to that end. Thus, a mind focused on beings will arise. That generation of mind which is completely seized by great compassion is the mind of enlightenment, the mind that benefits all beings, the mind that brings happiness to all beings, the unsurpassed mind, the mind that enters the realm of dharma, the mind of enlightenment that arises in dependence on all beings. Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment, composed by the teacher Nagarjuna, is complete. Translated by the Kashmiri Pandit Jaya Ananta and the Tibetan translator Khu Mdo-de 'Bar.
