Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment Nāgārjuna Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment Nāgārjuna In Sanskrit: Bodhicitta-vivaraṇa. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment. Homage to the noble Mañjuśrī! From now on, I will explain the method of cultivating the mind of enlightenment. The Blessed One said that all phenomena are distinguished by the mind, therefore, first it must be determined what the nature of the mind itself is. Therefore it is said: "Free from all things, The aggregates, elements, and sense bases, The grasped and the grasper are completely abandoned, Because the selflessness of phenomena is equality, The self-mind is unborn from the beginning, It is the nature of emptiness." Someone asks: What is the meaning of this statement? Answer: "Free from all things," here things refer to the self and so on. Here it is said that the mind is not the nature of self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, person, individual, born of power, son of power, agent, etc. Why? Because they do not have the nature of action. Therefore, if things like the self do not exist, how can it be said that the mind is their nature? Therefore, being free from all things, merely clinging to the self, one can truly arise. If it is said that all afflictions truly arise from clinging to the self, so the mind will become their nature, then the mind is not the nature of aggregates, elements, and sense bases. Therefore it is said: "The aggregates, elements, and sense bases, The grasped and the grasper are completely abandoned." Thus, if the things themselves, such as the aggregates, are not found in the ultimate sense, how can it be said that the mind will become their nature? How to understand it? First, the aggregates such as form are themselves without reality. The aggregate of form is the collection of the four great elements and what arises from the four great elements. The four great elements are: earth, water, fire, and wind. There are five things that arise from the four great elements: form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. The four great elements such as earth, and the things that arise from the four great elements such as form, are each different things.

Because it is not determined. Wherever something exists as one, others also exist. Therefore, form is merely a universal imputation in name only. It is said in the sutras that the skandha of form is empty of the skandha of form, so the skandha of form is also not completely established. Similarly, the skandha of feeling is also not completely established. How so? Feelings are of three types: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neither painful nor pleasant feeling. These are mutually dependent, because pleasure is contingent upon pain, and pain is contingent upon pleasure. If a dharma exists alone and cannot be determined, then it is real, like long and short. Furthermore, feelings are of two types: those arising from the body and those arising from the mind. For the moment, the body is included in the skandha of form, so it is not determined. Therefore, since there is no body, feelings arising from the body are not established. The mind also does not abide in a place, does not abide in a direction, has no form, cannot be indicated, does not fully abide, has no appearance, and cannot be discerned. Since it is said in this way, what kind of feeling is it? Therefore, feelings arising from the mind are also not established. Therefore, it is said in the sutras that the skandha of feeling is empty of the skandha of feeling, so the skandha of feeling is also not completely established. The skandha of perception is also merely a thing in name only. Perception is the nature of grasping at characteristics. In this way, for the moment, those things that should be grasped as characteristics do not exist, therefore, since there are no characteristics, there is also no possessor of characteristics. It is said in the sutras that the skandha of perception is empty of the skandha of perception, so the skandha of perception is also not completely established. The skandha of formation is also not completely established, because it is merely an aggregate. The skandha of formation refers to those things that are concordant with feeling, thought, perception, desire, touch, wisdom, memory, attention, and faith, etc., and those things that are not concordant with the arising of earth, water, fire, wind, etc. Mental phenomena and arising, etc., for each one, arising does not exist. The skandha of formation is the characteristic of karma.
