Statement of Purpose. Statement of Purpose. In Sanskrit: Śrī Hevajra Vajrasya Vajrapadoddharaṇanāma Pañjikā. In Tibetan: A commentary on the difficult points of the Glorious Hevajra, called "A Collection of Vajra Words." Homage to the Glorious Hevajra! Homage to the one who does not abide in samsara, who travels in samsara! Homage to the one who pacifies fear, who generates fear! Homage to the one who is free from attachment, the lord of desire! Homage to the one who dispels darkness, who is like darkness! By whose kindness my mind enters virtue, and who possesses the unequaled wisdom as refuge, all those who have become gurus in samsara, I respectfully take their foot dust upon the crown of my head. In order to dispel attachment to the literal meaning of the vajra words of this glorious and powerful tantra king, Hevajra, which are hidden by the wise, I will briefly clarify them. Thus, the perfectly enlightened Buddha said, "You should collect all my scriptures with opening phrases such as 'Thus have I heard, at one time.'" Therefore, the true compiler, Bodhisattva Vajragarbha, here establishes the opening phrase. The initial establishment of "Thus have I heard, at one time, the body, speech, and mind of the Bhagavan, all the Tathagatas, abiding in the bhaga of the Vajra Mother," should also be explained in a common way as expressing the initial perfection. Among these, "Thus" is the answer to a question. The Bodhisattvas asked Bodhisattva Vajragarbha, "How did you hear it from the Bhagavan? Please tell us as you heard it." Therefore, he answered, "What I am explaining is as I heard it from the Bhagavan." "I" refers to showing that what was heard was not transmitted from one to another, but was heard directly. "Heard" refers to being made an object by ear consciousness. This shows that it is not admitted as direct perception, because that is the realm that only the omniscient one can realize. "At one time" refers to not having heard this teaching repeatedly, but rather thinking that at other times other teachings were heard, and at this time this teaching was heard. Therefore,

Thus I have heard. At one time. These words should be understood correctly in sequence, without confusion, as they indicate that the listener is a direct disciple of the teacher and possesses the four qualities of extensive learning. The expression of perfect timing is "at one time." This is because, during the eighty years that the Bhagavan lived in the world as an emanation body, this precious tantra was not taught repeatedly, but only once at a specific time. Therefore, this time is particularly special compared to other times. Similarly, this also well expresses that this Dharma is difficult to obtain, and therefore is the perfect essence of the teachings. As it is said: The all-knowing ones in the world are like the udumbara flower. They appear once in hundreds of thousands of kalpas, and are difficult to be born in the future as well. The appearance of the practice of secret mantras is even rarer than that. Thus it is said. To explain the perfection of the teacher, the word "Bhagavan" is used. Through the certainty of the word, that is, because of destroying the enemy of the four maras, it is called Bhagavan. Or, by the meaning of destroying afflictions, wisdom is indicated by the name "destroying," and the one associated with it is Bhagavan. Or, because of being fearless, it is Bhagavan. As it is said in the "Arya-Avivartana-Cakra Sutra": Like the dharmas of space, although widely proclaimed to sentient beings, there is no fear in this (dharma), therefore it is called Bhagavan. Thus it is said. Or, because of possessing infinite qualities, it is Bhagavan. That is, the six qualities proclaimed in this very sutra refer to all qualities such as power. Thus it is explained. Or, because of being separated from the two extremes of existence and nirvana, it is Bhagavan, because permanence and impermanence are the nature of nirvana. These are combinations made by categories, not combinations of doubt. To explain the perfection of the retinue, all the Tathagatas, as well as body, speech, and mind, and Vajrayoginis, etc., are mentioned. This is because the supramundane retinue, such as the Tathagata Vairochana, etc.
