Commentary on Praising the Limitless Qualities, Elephant Tracks. Commentary on Praising the Limitless Qualities, Elephant Tracks. Chapter One: Showing the Stage of Intention. ༄། །In Indian language: Guṇa Aparyanta Stotra Ṭīkā. In Tibetan: Commentary on Praising the Limitless Qualities. Homage to the noble Mañjuśrī. The opening verse, entitled "The Buddha's Qualities are Inexhaustible," summarizes the following four meanings: qualities cannot be fully known; not adding or subtracting; not being arrogant; accomplishing what is desired. Among them, the first point indicates that qualities cannot be fully known. The phrase "Whatever beings praise you for" indicates not adding or subtracting. The phrase "Even if extremely small" indicates not being arrogant. The phrase "In this meaning, although my wisdom is weak, I will strive" indicates accomplishing what is desired. Next, the praise will be composed with fifty verses such as "Even if dwelling in the lower realms." Praise is the expression of uncommon qualities. Praise includes three stages: the stage of cause, the stage of result, and the stage of benefiting sentient beings. Among them, the stage of cause is from generating bodhicitta until dwelling under the Bodhi tree. The stage of result is the stage of generating the wisdom of perfect complete enlightenment, and abandoning all faults and attaining all qualities. The stage of benefiting sentient beings is from turning the wheel of Dharma and so on, until the teachings disappear. Among them, the stage of cause is divided into the stage of intention, the stage of practice, and the stage of mastery. The stage of intention is the aspiration to engage in benefiting others. There are also four related teachings on this: separately contemplating the causes of suffering; separately contemplating the causes of giving benefit; separately contemplating the causes of helping; and separately contemplating the causes of perfect enjoyment. The causes of that Bodhi aspiration are four: lineage and joy.

Kind teacher's compassion, not turning back from all sufferings, these four causes and conditions, greatly induce the mind of enlightenment. As it is said, the ten meanings show the intention. Among them, the phrase "Even in the states of suffering" shows the aspiration to transform for the sake of others. Its four proximate causes are: Firstly, "To sentient beings tormented by suffering" and so on, is to individually observe the arising of suffering. "Blinded by ignorance" and so on, is to individually observe the giving of benefit. "In previous cycles of existence" and so on, is to individually observe being a friend. "Having abandoned enjoyment" and so on, is to individually observe truly enjoying. "For whom beings have not passed into nirvana" and so on, is the aspiration for enlightenment. Its causes are also fourfold: Among them, firstly, "In situations of reproach" and so on, is having the lineage. "For whom if one can be one's own master" and so on, is relying on a virtuous spiritual friend. "The river of afflictions is extremely turbulent" and so on, is compassion. "These worlds also to oneself" and so on, is not turning back from suffering. Thus, the ten verses show the ten meanings. The first chapter on the state of mind. Chapter Two: Showing the State of Engaging in Practices with Aspiration ༄། The state of engagement is also the extent to which the perfections are taught. It is also of two types: those who engage in practice with aspiration, and those who have attained the grounds. Among them, firstly, the perfections of those who engage in practice with aspiration are ten, namely the perfections of generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, concentration, wisdom, skillful means, aspiration, strength, and knowledge. Among them, if one sees a person of inferior status, impoverished, and with a mind of hope, these phrases show the perfection of generosity. Also speaking words that are in accordance with reason, these phrases show the perfection of ethics. For whom even the non-virtuous actions of the wise, these phrases show the perfection of disharmony.

Through abandoning objects, the Paramita of Patience is shown. For the sake of pacifying oneself, these show the Paramita of Diligence. Not abandoning what is desired for giving, these show the Paramita of Meditation through abandoning unfavorable aspects. Not praising oneself, these show the Paramita of Wisdom through abandoning unfavorable aspects. Weary of existence and afflictions, these and the verses of qualities such as wisdom, these two verses show the Paramita of Skillful Means through refutation and response. Never has it occurred at any time, these show the Paramita of Aspiration that will perfect the complete accumulation. The moon of the autumn night, these show the Paramita of Strength. When worldly sufferings speak, these show the Paramita of Wisdom. This is the stage of practice for those who act with faith, the second chapter ends. Chapter Three: Showing the Stage of Practice for Those Who Have Attained the Grounds. ༄། །The giving of those who have attained the grounds is endowed with four perfections, namely: perfection of intention, perfection of action, perfection of recipient, and perfection of the object of giving. Rich and wealthy, these are the perfection of intention itself. Not delighting in giving, these are the perfection of action. Like birds gathering on mountainside trees when fruits ripen, these are the perfection of the recipient. Wealth, subjects, and consorts, these are the perfection of the object of giving, which is the Paramita of Giving. Harm arises in this world, these are the Paramita of Morality, which is completely pure in nature. Like a doctor possessed by a demon, these are the Paramita of Patience, which is free from conceptualization. You always treat virtues and superior wealth with respect, these are expanded by skillful means.
