All sentient beings deluded by these, how pitiful! Please hold them with compassion. How can parents bear to see their beloved child fall into a pit of fire? Likewise, this supreme prayer arises from the force of unbearable compassion. Some may misunderstand it as hatred, but I have no hatred at all. Only concern for faults, and joy in goodness. The reason for this is that 'discipline can be lost, but view can never be lost,' and so on, as explained extensively in the scriptures. Alas, the degenerate age! Especially possessing the turbidity of views. Therefore, many have lost their view, and even more have lost their conduct. To those who have lost both view and conduct, may the compassion of the noble ones look upon them. Bless them to fully perfect the correct view, meditation, and conduct. This prayer called 'The Excellent Prayer' was composed by Gyalkhampa Tondpa Zhidren (རྒྱལ་ཁམས་པ་རྟོན་པ་བཞི་ལྡན་), who possesses the four reliances. May this also benefit the Dharma and sentient beings! May it be auspicious! (The original is an old version from Drepung and the Dzamtang edition. Please forgive the difference in wording between 'snying re je'o' (how pitiful) in the old version and 'snying re je na' (if pitiful) in the Dzamtang edition.)
