A Prayer Called 'General Commentary on the Teachings' Homage and refuge to all the incarnate Dharma Lords and venerable Lamas. Please hold us with great compassion at all times. O precious, eternally stable, and spontaneous Dharma Lord, Whose activities pervade the sky and accomplish spontaneously, Who reveals the unmistaken, definitive, secret, and ultimate meaning, I bow to the feet of the Lama who possesses the four reliances. All conditioned things are like a waterfall on a steep mountain, Like clouds, lightning, and dew on the tip of a blade of grass, You perfectly show that they are impermanent, unstable, and subject to change, I bow to the feet of the Lama. Like falling into a pit of fire or into the mouth of a venomous snake, Like a bee circling inside a jar, You show that all three realms are of the nature of suffering, I bow to the feet of the Lama. Those who grasp at an impure body as being pure, Are like an ignorant child who delights in and clings to A vase filled with vomit, adorned with ornaments, I bow to the feet of the Lama. For sentient beings who delight in samsara itself, Generating revulsion and weariness towards impermanence and impurity, Entering the path of selflessness, emptiness, and peace, I bow to the feet of the Lama who shows the four truths. All phenomena arise solely from conditions, There is no self, sentient being, life, or agent, Like dreams, illusions, mirages, and echoes, I bow to the feet of the Lama. Although they appear to be real, they are merely imprints of the mind, Mind, intellect, and consciousness as well, Are merely names and conventions, empty like the sky, I bow to the feet of the Lama who clearly shows this. The aggregates, such as form, are like bubbles and clumps, Like water bubbles in water, like mirages and so forth. The sense bases are like empty villages, the elements like venomous snakes, I bow to the feet of the Lama who shows these resemblances. All phenomena of existence and nirvana, Are unborn, unceasing, free from going and coming, and without abiding, Without beginning or end, empty in their own essence, I bow to the feet of the Lama who shows this emptiness. Like a lamp inside a vase, like a treasure of the poor, and so forth, The Sugatagarbha (Tibetan: བདེ་གཤེགས་སྙིང་པོ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: सुगतगर्भ, Sanskrit Romanization: sugatagarbha, Chinese literal meaning: Tathagatagarbha), the clear light Dharmakaya, In conventional truth, abides within the temporary husk of the aggregates, I bow to the feet of the Lama who shows this. All phenomena of imputation and dependence are not existent, The perfectly established nature, the nature of reality, is never non-existent, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having dissected all phenomena, transcending the biases of existence, non-existence, permanence, and annihilation, I prostrate at the feet of the Guru! Conventional truths are merely dependent arising of cause and effect; ultimate truth is self-arisen, transcending dependent arising. I prostrate at the feet of the Guru, who reveals the difference between that which arises from conditions and self-arisen wisdom! Outer and inner phenomena are merely the illusory wheel of ignorance; the other shore is the self-arisen wisdom of Dharma-nature. I prostrate at the feet of the Guru, who distinguishes between consciousness and wisdom, samsara and nirvana, and the two truths! Conventional truth of the three realms is merely illusory appearance and imputation; ultimate truth of the three realms is the Tathagatagarbha (如来藏, tathāgatagarbha, tathāgatagarbha, Womb of the Thus-Come One), indestructible, unexamined, and non-deceptive appearance. I prostrate at the feet of the Guru, who dissects and reveals this! The first turning of the wheel of Dharma is the teaching of the Four Noble Truths; the second turning is the teaching of no-characteristics; the third turning is the teaching of definitive meaning. I prostrate at the feet of the Guru, who reveals the intention of the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma! With the nectar stream of the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma, cleansing the three obscurations—gross, subtle, and extremely subtle—attaining the preciousness of the pure Dharmakaya (法身, dharmakāya, dharmakāya, Body of Dharma). I prostrate at the feet of the Guru, who reveals the stainless Dharma! To those who cling to existence, you reveal all things as mind; to those who cling to mind, you reveal the Middle Way of non-appearance; to those who cling to non-existence, you reveal the Middle Way of true appearance. I prostrate at the feet of the Guru! To those of inferior capacity, you reveal the Dharma of cause and effect; to those who cling to existence, you reveal all things as emptiness; to those who cling to non-existence, you reveal the radiant Tathagatagarbha (如来藏, tathāgatagarbha, tathāgatagarbha, Womb of the Thus-Come One). I prostrate at the feet of the Guru! To those of lesser capacity, you reveal the Shravaka Vehicle; to those of middling capacity, you reveal the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle; to those of supreme capacity, you reveal the supreme vehicle, the path of cause and effect. I prostrate at the feet of the Guru, who reveals the Sutra and Tantra! Just as parents nurture young children, adapting to their capacity, you also tame beings to be tamed in stages with the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma and the supreme secret teachings. I prostrate to you! Or, just as you guide disciples of inferior, middling, and supreme capacity to engage in practices that suit their disposition, you also reveal teachings that correspond to the disposition of beings to be tamed with the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma and the methods of secret mantra. I prostrate to you! Just as one ascends a three-storied mansion, you guide us to ascend step by step the three-storied mansion of the Buddha's teachings with the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma and the supreme secret teachings. I prostrate to you! Just as a jeweler gradually cleanses the three impurities of a jewel, you cleanse the Tathagatagarbha (如来藏, tathāgatagarbha, tathāgatagarbha, Womb of the Thus-Come One) with the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma and the supreme secret teachings. I prostrate to you! The Tathagatagarbha (如来藏, tathāgatagarbha, tathāgatagarbha, Womb of the Thus-Come One) is both cause and effect; other causes are radiant emptiness, like an image; the effect is... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- གཞན་
