Extremely long syllables must be accurate and without error. Short syllables are as brief as the blink of an eye, long syllables are twice as long, and extremely long syllables are three times as long. The nature of all letters abides within the blink of an eye.’ And so on, it is clearly stated. Therefore, do not chant mantras, as it will lead to lengthening short syllables, or making them extremely long, or even very, very long, longer than long syllables, which will cause many faults. Mantra reciters should avoid chanting, hold a rosary, and recite as described above, so that blessings will come as described. Then, sometimes praise and offerings are mentioned, because in order to eliminate fatigue, drowsiness, dullness, sleep, and distraction during recitation, one specifically offers excellent words of praise to the mantra, and prays for the fulfillment of wishes, etc. This is the intention, and it is never intended to chant the mantra itself.’ Thus, many wise and great accomplished masters unanimously agree, and say that this is the true intention of the great charioteers and Vajradhara. Furthermore, regarding the number of recitations, if one chants too much, there will be many faults such as excessiveness, and between each chanted mantra, one can complete ten or twenty or more correct recitations. Therefore, even if one recites correctly now, it is a mistake to think that one has not recited because one has chanted.’ The so-called ‘Kama’ (བཀའ་མ་, oral transmission) and ‘Terma’ (གཏེར་མ་, treasure teachings), ‘Kama’ refers to the great charioteers, especially Śāntideva (ཙནྚ་གཽ་མི), Candrakīrti (ཟླ་བ་གྲགས་པ), Bhikṣuṇī Śrī (དགེ་སློང་མ་དཔལ་མོ), Upāsaka Guṇadatta (དགེ་བསྙེན་ཀུན་སྦྱིན), Atiśa (ཇོ་བོ་ཆེན་པོ་རྗེ་ལྷ་གཅིག), Bodhisattva Candragarbha (བྱང་སེམས་ཟླ་བ་རྒྱལ་མཚན), Grubthob Kyer Gangpa (གྲུབ་ཐོབ་སྐྱེར་རྒང་པ), Grubthob Shawa Wung Gangpa (གྲུབ་ཐོབ་ཤྭ་བུང་སྒང་པ), Grubthob Nyan Tshembu Pa (གྲུབ་ཐོབ་གཉན་ཚེམ་བུ་པ), Grubthob Dampa Marpo (གྲུབ་ཐོབ་དམ་པ་དམར་མོ་), and so on, very many people practiced with the correct method of recitation and obtained good signs of accomplishment, which they praised greatly. The so-called ‘Terma’, the seven-letter mantra (referring to the Seven Line Prayer to Guru Rinpoche) was discovered by Guru Chöwang (གུ་རུ་ཆོས་དབང་), who himself practiced with the correct method of recitation, thereby gaining power and many merits, becoming a holy being who met Guru Padmasambhava (གུ་རུ་པདྨ་འབྱུང་གནས་), and showing the correct method of recitation to fortunate disciples. Do not share with unqualified people. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those who do not think of the afterlife, but only care about this life, indulging in illusory appearances, and those who like fame, empty and rotten inside, the master compassionately worried that they might forever lose the opportunity to obtain the Dharma, so he created this ritual that combines chanting. Initially, he guided them through chanting, and had them recite the true mantra hundreds and thousands of times at appropriate times. It is said that if a fortunate person appears among them, he will also transmit other profound teachings. But later, the fortunate ones became fewer and fewer, and the unfortunate ones became more and more, so the recitation of the true mantra seemed to disappear, while the false recitation became popular. Those lazy men and women without faith gathered together to sing and dance, and also called this gathering the recitation of Mani. This phenomenon should be avoided and not participated in. Alas! Alas! In this way, the essence of the true Dharma will be covered by falsehood, the truth will be buried, and the superficial truth will hinder true practice. I pray that all Buddhas will look upon these beings with compassionate eyes! Not only that, they also slander the true words of the Buddha, saying that reciting the (Tibetan: ཧྲཱིཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ह्रीः, Sanskrit Romanization: hrīḥ, Chinese literal meaning: sha) syllable once is not as good as reciting the six-character mantra, and so on. For these people, even more intense compassion should arise. If someone asks, is there any fault in reciting the (Tibetan: ཧྲཱིཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ह्रीः, Sanskrit Romanization: hrīḥ, Chinese literal meaning: sha) syllable? Answer: There is no fault, because it is the seed syllable of the heart essence of all Buddhas. Even if you don't recite it, there is no fault in visualizing it with the thought of the six-character mantra. As for whether the six-character mantra is profound, it will be clear by consulting the profound scriptures such as the *Treasure Chest Sutra*. In the treasure teachings, there is a distinction between upper and lower treasures. The upper treasure belongs to the lineage of Nyang Ral Nyima Öser, which does not directly recite the (Tibetan: ཧྲཱིཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ह्रीः, Sanskrit Romanization: hrīḥ, Chinese literal meaning: sha) syllable, which is consistent with the view here. Therefore, it is meaningless to cling to one side and argue endlessly. If someone says that reciting the six-character mantra is more profound, then the ability to recite and meditate will be lost. If both are recited, it will not bring great benefits. However, it is said that it is possible to just plant the seed. The scriptures say that just seeing the scriptures can bring immeasurable benefits, and so on. For these immeasurable benefits, perhaps they can be realized at other times. One cannot think that the scriptures are false just because they do not appear immediately now. The most important thing is to generate infinite faith and reverence for the true words of the Buddha, and not to have any doubts. No matter which Dharma you practice, you should meditate in a secluded place. The specific methods are described in detail elsewhere. The methods of practicing rituals together with many people, or performing fasting and other activities, are also described in detail elsewhere. However, these require capable people to preside over them, which is more difficult. Here, I will introduce a method that can be practiced by the public together: If you have offerings, that is the best, you can prepare abundant offerings; if not, you can prepare as much as you can. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
