The Dharani Called "Obstruction of Stinginess" The Dharani Called "Obstruction of Stinginess" In Tibetan: The Dharani Called "Obstruction of Stinginess." Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! More than stinginess, the result of the sin of others creating obstruction of stinginess is as follows: The venerable Shariputra and the venerable Maudgalyayana were in a remote area, each contemplating with discriminating wisdom. At noon, the two of them were in an open space when they saw a hungry ghost woman, her body blue and withered, making a "khok khok" sound, her hair tangled, her eyes red and crooked to the left, her lower lip long and crooked to the right, her neck and limbs very thin and long, her hands clenched into fists, her nails piercing straight through, her nails bluish-black. From her mouth, she uttered five kinds of sounds, namely, the sound of "need," the sound of "no," the sound of "do not give," the sound of "giving will become too much," and the sound of "give just a little bit." After encountering something that made their hair stand on end, the two of them thought: "The village is close to the monastery and there is plenty of food, so they went to the city to beg and obtained white foods, sweet foods, rice, barley flour, and other foods and drinks. They took them to the hungry ghost, but she did not accept them, made the five sounds mentioned above, and fled. The two of them were very unhappy, thinking about that hungry ghost woman, not thinking of anything else, and immediately went to where the Blessed One was staying in the Garden of Light. They prostrated at his feet, but were too exhausted to ask questions. The Blessed One said, "Son of good family, what is wrong with you? If you have a question, take a breath and ask." The Blessed One said, "We are very unhappy, because we are exhausted from having many complaints to you." The Blessed One said, "What happened?" They said, "We two were in a remote area, listening to the Blessed One's words of discriminating contemplation, and when we went for a walk far away, we saw a hungry ghost woman, her body blue and withered, making a "khok khok" sound, her hair tangled, her eyes red and crooked to the left, her lower lip long and crooked to the right, her neck and limbs very thin and long, her hands clenched into fists,

Namos dug directly with her fingers, her body bluish-green. From her mouth, she uttered five sounds, like this: "If needed," "If not needed," "Don't give," "Even if you give, don't give too much," and "Reduce it a little and then give." After encountering a creature making strange noises, we two thought that since it was closer to the village than the monastery and there was plenty of food, we went to the city. After begging, we obtained three white foods, three sweet foods, rice, roasted barley flour, and other foods and drinks. We took them to the hungry ghost woman and offered them to her. From her mouth, she uttered the same five sounds as before, and without accepting anything given, she ran away. We wondered what had happened and what method there was to cure her. The Blessed One said, "Noble sons, that is very good. I will tell you, listen well and keep it in mind. What is the cause of this? Her body is bluish and dry because she herself is unwilling to eat. Her neck is thin because she is miserly when others eat and use things. Her limbs are thin and her fingers dig directly because she said to the donors, 'Reduce it a little and then give,' and she herself is also unwilling to use things. Her hair is tangled because she has done things that are displeasing to everyone. Her eyes are red because she is filled with desire. She is leaning to the left because she has looked at others with bad eyes. Her upper lip is long and leaning to the right because she said, 'Even if you give, don't give too much.' The five sounds that come from her mouth are the result of actions and causes being consistent, and they arise from the increase of the habits of what was said before. Due to such karmic power, no matter what is given, it will not be beneficial. Only water, she cannot give herself, because she has not prevented the actions of others. Now, recite the mantra once over clean water that has not been touched by roasted barley flour, and shake the cymbals once, and if you give it to her, her lineage will be liberated and her desires will be satisfied. It is like this: Om, jvala, midam, sarva, preta, bhya, svaha. (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་ཛྭ་ལ་མི་དཾ་སརྦ་པྲེ་ཏ་བྷྱཿསྭཱ་ཧཱ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: ॐ ज्वल मिदं सर्व प्रेत भ्यः स्वाहा, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: oṃ jvala midaṃ sarva preta bhyaḥ svāhā, Literal Chinese meaning: Om, burning, giving, all, hungry ghost, multitude, svaha.) Please, explain the meaning of this mantra." The Blessed One said, "Om is the nature of the five wisdoms, the ultimate truth. Jvala is desire burning like fire. Midam is human beings due to miserliness and
