Fifty-first Chapter: The Chapter on the Novice Kyunti. Fifty-first Chapter: The Chapter on the Novice Kyunti. Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, in Shravasti. At that time, the venerable Shariputra, day and night, three times a day, observed with his divine eye which sentient beings had the potential to be tamed, and he would go to those who had the potential to be tamed. At another time, some merchants were going to another country to trade, and they took a dog with them. On the way, the dog stole meat from a merchant, and that merchant became angry, broke the dog's legs, and abandoned it in an empty wilderness and left. Then, Shariputra, seeing with his divine eye that the dog was hungry, put on his Dharma robes, took his begging bowl, and went to beg for alms. Immediately, he flew into the sky and went to the dog, generating a mind of loving-kindness and compassion. He fed the dog with food. The dog ate the food and was especially happy. Shariputra taught the dog the holy Dharma. The dog also passed away at that time and was reborn as the son of a Brahmin in Shravasti. At another time, Shariputra went alone to beg for alms and went to the door of a Brahmin's house. That Brahmin said to Shariputra, "Why do you go alone to beg for alms? Don't you have a novice?" Shariputra said, "I don't have a novice, so I go alone to beg for alms. I hear that you have a son. Is it possible for you to give him to me?" The Brahmin said, "I have a son named Kyunti. But he is still young and cannot do anything. I will give him to you when he grows up." Shariputra, having heard these words, kept them in mind and returned to Jeta's Grove. After seven years, he went to the Brahmin's house and asked the Brahmin for his son. That Brahmin also gave his son to Shariputra. Shariputra also took that son and brought him to Jeta's Grove. He ordained him as a novice and taught him various aspects of the holy Dharma. His mind was completely liberated, and he became an Arhat, endowed with the six supernormal powers and all qualities. At another time, the novice

When La Kyunté, through the power of wisdom, examined what he had done in his previous life to obtain this body, meet the teacher, and attain the fruit, he thought: In a previous life, I was a hungry dog. Through the kindness of my teacher, Śāriputra, I obtained a human body and the fruit. Seeing and realizing this, he was overjoyed and thought: I have been liberated from suffering through the kindness of this teacher! Now, as long as I live, I should not take the full ordination of a bhikṣu in order to serve the teacher. At that time, Ānanda said to the Blessed One: What sinful deeds did this novice commit in the past that caused him to be born as a dog? And what virtuous roots did he cultivate to attain liberation? The Blessed One said to Ānanda: In the past, during the time of the Buddha Light Protector, some monks were gathered together. Among them was a young monk with a beautiful voice, but when he praised and sang, it was difficult for everyone to hear. At that time, there was an old monk whose voice was not beautiful, but he still praised, recited verses, and sang. That old monk was an arhat, endowed with all the qualities of practice. On another occasion, the young monk with the beautiful voice said to the old monk with the unpleasant voice: Your voice is like a dog barking! He spoke words of disparagement. Then, the old monk asked the young monk: Do you know me? He replied: I know you, you are the elder monk of the Buddha Light Protector. The old monk said: I am an arhat, endowed with the qualities of practice. The young monk was frightened, regretted it, and confessed to him. Although the old monk granted forgiveness, due to the evil words he had spoken, he was always born as a dog for five hundred lifetimes. Because he renounced and kept the precepts, he met me here and attained liberation. At that time, the Blessed One spoke these words, and Ānanda and the many others in the retinue rejoiced and were delighted. The Chapter on the Novice La Kyunté.

This is the fifty-first (chapter). The Sutra of Wise and Foolish is completed. It seems to have been translated from the Han region. In Sanskrit: Dirghanakha Parivrajaka Prichchhana Sutra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Questions of the Wandering Ascetic Sen-rings. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus I have heard: At one time, the Blessed One was in Rajagrha, on Vulture Peak Mountain (Grdhrakuta), together with a great community of monks, a thousand two hundred and fifty monks. Then, the Blessed One taught the Dharma to the four assemblies, namely, the Brahmacharya, which is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with good meaning, good words, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, completely clear, and correctly expounded. At that time, the wandering ascetic Sen-rings went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, in front of the Blessed One, he put down his water pot and umbrella, and sat silently watching. Then, the wandering ascetic Sen-rings said this to the Blessed One: O Gautama, is it true that the world is dominated by karma, enjoys the fruits of karma, is bound by karma, and karma is stable? What karma did the Shramana Gautama previously do and accumulate, so that the Shramana Gautama possesses a vajra body? The Blessed One taught: Great Brahmin, this is the result of the karma of abstaining from killing in my previous life. What karma did the Shramana Gautama previously do and accumulate, so that the Shramana Gautama has long fingers and webbed fingers? The Blessed One taught: Great Brahmin, this is the result of the karma of abstaining from stealing in my previous life. What karma did the Shramana Gautama previously do and accumulate, so that the Shramana Gautama has complete faculties and an extremely full body? The Blessed One taught: Great Brahmin, this is the result of the karma of abstaining from sexual misconduct in my previous life. What karma did the Shramana Gautama previously do and accumulate, so that the Shramana Gautama's tongue can cover the entire face? The Blessed One taught:
