Chapter Forty-Nine: Called "The Steadfast Lion's Intent". Chapter Forty-Nine: Called "The Steadfast Lion's Intent". Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling on Vulture Peak Mountain in Rajagriha. At that time, Devadatta constantly harbored evil thoughts towards the Blessed One, intending to proclaim himself as the Buddha, claiming that the Thus-Gone One was no more. He instigated Prince Ajatashatru to kill his father, saying it would be good if a new Buddha and a new king ruled the country together. Prince Ajatashatru listened to him, killed his father, and ascended the throne himself. At that time, the people of the country developed ill will towards all the monks, even disliking to see them. Later, on another occasion, the monks went to the city to beg for alms, but the people were angry and gave them nothing. The monks returned with empty bowls and went to Vulture Peak Mountain, where they said to the Blessed One: "Devadatta has committed sinful and unwholesome deeds, and all the patrons have developed ill will towards the monks." The Blessed One said to Ananda: "Any sentient being who harbors ill will towards a monk wearing the ochre robe is harboring ill will towards the Buddhas of the past, the Pratyekabuddhas, and the Arhats. It is also harboring ill will towards the Buddhas of the future, the Pratyekabuddhas, and the Arhats. Know that it is also harboring ill will towards the Buddhas, the Pratyekabuddhas, and the Arhats who are dwelling in the present. Thus, by harboring ill will towards the noble ones of the three times, sinful actions will ripen into immeasurable evil consequences. Why is that? Because the ochre robe is the banner of the Buddhas of the three times. Any sentient being who shaves their hair and beard and wears a colored robe will soon be completely liberated from all suffering, attain uncontaminated wisdom, and become the protector, refuge, and support of all beings. Any sentient being who generates faith towards those who have renounced and wear the colored Dharma robe will obtain immeasurable merit."

So be it. Ananda, in the past, I also developed faith in wearing robes of dyed color, and by honoring and respecting them, I attained perfect enlightenment. Ananda asked: World Honored One, please show us how the World Honored One in the past wore robes of dyed color and honored and respected them. We would like to hear it. The World Honored One said to Ananda: Listen very well and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. Ananda, in the past, beyond countless immeasurable eons, in this Jambudvipa, there was a great king named Debi, who ruled eighty-four thousand small kingdoms. At that time, there was no Buddha's Dharma in the world, but only solitary Buddhas lived in the mountains and groves, traveling in the sky and benefiting sentient beings. At that time, people revered and worshiped those solitary Buddhas. There was a lion named Steadfast Vow, whose body hair was like the color of gold, very dazzling, living there. It ate fruits and roots, and did not kill sentient beings. At that time, a hunter saw it and was very happy: Now I will gain happiness, kill this lion, skin it and offer it to the king, and I will surely be spared from disasters and escape poverty. Having thought like this, at another time, the hunter wore a reddish-brown Dharma robe, tucked a bow and arrow under his arm, and went to where the lion was. At that time, the lion was asleep, so the hunter shot it with a poisoned arrow. The lion woke up and wanted to chase the hunter, but seeing him wearing a Dharma robe, he thought: Such a person will not live long in the world, and will soon be liberated from all suffering. Why is this? This dyed Dharma robe is the banner of the Buddhas of the past, future, and present. If I harm him, I will be generating hatred towards the Buddhas of the three times. Having thought like this, he abandoned the intention to kill. The poisoned arrow had already entered, and as his body and life were about to end, he spoke these words: Ya la la va sha sa svaha After speaking, heaven and earth shook, and rain fell without clouds. The gods observed with their divine eyes, and were amazed.
