Chapter Forty-Six: The Chapter of the Ten Sons of the Daughter Sumana. Chapter Forty-Six: The Chapter of the Ten Sons of the Daughter Sumana. Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One (Sanskrit: Bhagavān, Romanized Sanskrit: Bhagavān, Literal Chinese meaning: World Honored One) was in Shravasti (Sanskrit: Śrāvastī, Romanized Sanskrit: Śrāvastī, Literal Chinese meaning: Abundance of Virtue), in the Jeta Grove (Sanskrit: Jetavana, Romanized Sanskrit: Jetavana, Literal Chinese meaning: Victory Grove) of Prince Jeta, in the garden of Anathapindada (Sanskrit: Anāthapiṇḍada, Romanized Sanskrit: Anāthapiṇḍada, Literal Chinese meaning: Giver to the Helpless). At that time, the youngest daughter of the householder Anathapindada, named Sumana, was beautiful in appearance and pleasing to behold. Among the sons, he loved this youngest daughter the most, and he took her wherever he went. On another occasion, the householder went to pay homage to the Buddha, and the daughter followed as usual. When the daughter saw the Buddha, she was especially delighted and thought to anoint with incense all the places where the Buddha resided. At that time, the daughter was holding a mango fruit in her hand, and the Blessed One said, "Give it here." The daughter immediately offered the mango to the Blessed One. The Blessed One took the mango fruit and wrote many names of holy incense, and then gave it back to the daughter. After that, the daughter and her parents returned home, and they went to the market and bought various kinds of incense that the Blessed One liked, and then returned to the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta. They ground incense every day and anointed it in all places. On another occasion, a prince from the country of Tigashiri was sent to the royal palace, and on his way back, he gradually reached the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta. He saw the daughter grinding incense and fell in love with her, thinking to take her as his wife. So he asked King Prakasharaja for the daughter. The king asked, "Whose daughter is she?" He replied, "She is the daughter of the householder Anathapindada." The king said, "Even if I ask for her, it will be of no use. Go and ask the daughter's parents." The prince repeatedly asked the king, and the king advised him in the same way. The prince sent all his servants and attendants back to his country, leaving only one elephant. On another occasion, the prince went to the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, stole the daughter Sumana, put her on the elephant, and fled. Anathapindada

Even though he chased after her, he couldn't catch up. Afterwards, he returned to his homeland and took a wife. Then, that wife became pregnant. Later, after the months were complete, she laid ten eggs. When the eggs were broken, from each egg emerged a boy who was beautiful and handsome, surpassing others. When these sons grew up, they became fond of killing wild animals because they were brave and strong. The boys' mother admonished them not to kill wild animals in this way, and the boys said to their mother: There is no greater joy than hunting wild animals. It seems as if our mother hates us because she doesn't allow us to kill. The mother said: I do not hate you. The boys' mother did not allow you to kill wild animals because she cherished you. It is like this: the sin of killing causes sentient beings to suffer in hell for hundreds of thousands of years. They are always transformed into the heads of deer, the heads of sheep, the heads of rabbits, and so on, becoming the heads of all wild animals. The guardians of hell will kill them for countless years. Even if they want to be liberated from that, they will not be liberated from the karma of sin. The sons said: If we do as you advise, did you hear this advice from someone else? Or did you think about it yourself and then speak? The mother said: I heard these words from the Buddha. The sons said: Who is this being called Buddha? The mother replied: Haven't you heard? The son of King Śuddhodana, with a beautiful and handsome body, could have become a universal monarch, but he did not want old age, sickness, and death, so he renounced the world and practiced the path. Through meditation, he accomplished his aspirations and attained the unsurpassed fruit. His body is sixteen cubits tall, adorned with the major and minor marks. He possesses the three knowledges and the six supernormal powers. He knows the past without limit and also knows the future without limit. The three times are like placing a fruit in the palm of one's hand. When the sons heard this, they were overjoyed and asked: How far away is that Buddha from here now? Is it possible to see him? The mother said: He is currently residing in Shravasti and it is possible to see him. Sons
