第四十二，象护之章。 第四十二，象护之章。 如是我闻，一时，世尊在舍卫城，胜子园给孤独的精舍中。那时，摩揭陀国，一施主生了一个儿子，长得好看，令人喜爱，具有吉相。小孩刚出生时，仓库里自然出现了一个奇特的金象幼崽。小孩的父母看到这种情况，非常高兴，请来相士看相，相士也断定小孩具有福德之相。他们问，小孩刚出生时，发生了什么奇特的征兆？小孩的父母说，这孩子出生时，仓库里自然出现了一只金象幼崽。因此，小孩的名字被命名为象护。小孩长得越大，金象幼崽也越大。小孩走，象幼崽也走，总是形影不离。象幼崽的屎尿也变成金子。象护长大后，和大约五百个施主的儿子，总是玩在一起。他们彼此倾心，后来有一天，孩子们各自谈论自己家里有什么奇特之处。其中一些人说，我家的床榻和卧具等等，都是用七宝制成的。有些人说，我的家和花园等等，都是珍宝。有些人说，我的仓库总是装满珍宝。大家都各自说了自己家里的奇特之处。然后，象护也说，我刚出生时，也自然出现了一只金象幼崽。我长多大，象幼崽也长多大。我能随心所欲地去任何地方，骑着象去看戏等等，都能随心所欲地快速到达。而且，象的屎尿也会变成金子。当时，王子阿阇世也坐在那里。

Chapter Forty-two: The Story of Elephant Protector. Chapter Forty-two: The Story of Elephant Protector. Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, in Anathapindika's monastery, near Shravasti. At that time, in the land of Magadha, a householder had a son, who was handsome, pleasing to behold, and possessed of auspicious marks. When the boy was first born, a wondrous golden elephant calf spontaneously appeared in the treasury. The boy's parents were greatly pleased to see this, and they showed the boy to a fortune-teller, who recognized that the boy possessed marks of merit. They asked what wondrous signs had occurred when the boy was first born. The boy's parents said, "When this boy was born, a golden elephant calf spontaneously appeared in the treasury." And so, the boy was named Elephant Protector. As the boy grew, so did the golden elephant calf. When the boy walked, the elephant calf also walked, always accompanying him. Even the urine and dung of the elephant calf turned into gold. As Elephant Protector grew up, he always played together with about five hundred sons of householders. They were devoted to each other, and one day, those children spoke separately about what wonders existed in their homes. Some of them said, "In my house, all the couches, seats, bedding, and so forth are made of the seven precious substances." Some said, "My house and gardens, and so forth, are all made of precious substances." Some said, "My treasury is always completely filled with precious gems." Everyone spoke in various ways about what wonders they possessed. Then Elephant Protector also said, "When I was first born, a golden elephant calf spontaneously appeared. As much as I have grown, so has the elephant calf grown. I can go wherever I wish, riding the elephant to see plays and so forth, and I can go quickly wherever I desire. And even the urine and dung of the elephant turn into gold." At that time, Prince Ajatashatru was also sitting there.

于是，象夫听到后心想，我什么时候当了国王，就把象抢过来。后来当了国王，就把象夫叫来说：‘把你的象给我。’象夫的父母对儿子说：‘像未生怨一样，嗔怒暴戾，贪得无厌。如果杀了自己的父亲，更何况别人呢？现在你的象要被抢走了，必须把象献出去。’儿子说：‘我的象谁也抢不走。’说完，兄弟二人骑上象，来到国王的王宫门口。守门人禀告了国王。国王也命令象夫兄弟二人不要下象，进宫来。象夫兄弟二人骑着象，进到王宫里才下来。然后向国王行礼，说：‘愿您安康！’国王非常高兴，让人铺设座位，让他们坐下，并赐予食物和饮料。这样说了之后，又说：‘之后再出去。’国王命令象夫：‘留下金象，你们可以走了。’于是象夫也按照国王的命令，把象留下，兄弟二人步行离开。刚走到门口，没过多久，那象也立刻沉入地下，出现在门外象夫的面前。象夫兄弟二人又骑上象，回到家后心想：国王也不依法行事，无罪之人也加以刑罚。如果我不给，恐怕会为了这象而丧命。现在世尊在世间为众多生灵谋福利，我应该去他那里，从家里出家，欢喜梵行。’这样想着，就向父母请求出家，父母也答应了。之后，顶礼膜拜，骑上金象，前往王子胜林。到了世尊面前，用头顶礼他的双足。

Then, after hearing what the elephant keeper said, he thought, 'When I become king, I will seize the elephant.' Later, after becoming king, he summoned the elephant keeper and commanded, 'Give me your elephant.' Then the elephant keeper's parents said to their son, 'Like Ajatashatru, he is wrathful, violent, and insatiable. If he killed his own father, what need to mention others? Now your elephant will be taken away, you must give the elephant.' The son said, 'No one can take my elephant.' Having said this, the two brothers rode the elephant and came to the gate of the king's palace. The gatekeepers informed the king. The king also commanded the two elephant keeper brothers to come inside without dismounting the elephant. The two elephant keeper brothers rode the elephant and came inside the palace before dismounting. Then they bowed to the king and said, 'May you be well!' The king was very pleased and had a seat laid out for them to sit on, and gave them food and drink. After saying this, he also said, 'Go out later.' The king commanded the elephant keeper, 'Leave the golden elephant and you may leave.' Then the elephant keeper also left the elephant according to the king's command, and the two brothers left on foot. As soon as they reached the gate, before long, that elephant also immediately sank into the ground and appeared outside the gate in front of the elephant keeper. The two elephant keeper brothers rode it again and returned home, thinking, 'The king does not act according to the Dharma, and even innocent people are punished. If I don't give it, I'm afraid I will lose my life for this elephant. Now the Blessed One is in the world working for the benefit of many beings, I should go to him, renounce from home, and rejoice in the pure conduct.' Thinking this, they asked their parents for ordination, and their parents also granted it. Afterwards, they prostrated and paid homage, rode the golden elephant, and went to where Prince Jeta's Grove was. When they arrived before the Blessed One, they bowed their heads at his feet.

如是详细启禀之后，世尊说：“善来。”头发和胡须自然脱落，成为了比丘。世尊为他宣说了相应的四谛之法，他便成了阿罗汉。比丘象护无论和比丘同伴们住在哪里，那金象总是伴随在他身边。当时，在舍卫城的人们为了观看金象都聚集起来，对瑜伽行者造成了许多干扰。那些比丘们禀告了世尊，世尊因此对比丘象护说道：“因为看你的象，很多人都不得清净，你快点舍弃它吧。”象护禀告说：“我从一开始就想舍弃它，但却无法做到。”世尊说：“你对着象说三遍：‘我已断绝了生，从今以后不需要你了。’这样它就会消失。”象护也按照世尊所说，对着象说了三遍‘不需要你’，那金象就沉入了地里。比丘们感到惊奇，便禀告世尊说：“这位象护比丘，过去在什么样的福田中种下了什么样的善根，才会有如此成熟的果报？”世尊对阿难陀和比丘们说：“任何凡夫，在三宝的福田中，哪怕种下一点点善的种子，也会获得无量的果报。”过去，光明佛出世时，人们的寿命有两万岁。那位佛陀利益众生之后，涅槃后建造了许多高大的佛塔。当时，在一个佛塔中，最初的菩萨从兜率天降临，进入了母亲的子宫。

The Blessed One taught him the Dharma of the Four Noble Truths accordingly, and he became an Arhat. Wherever the monk Elephant Protector stayed with his fellow monks, the golden elephant was always with him. At that time, the people in Shravasti gathered to see the golden elephant, causing much disturbance to the yogis. Those monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One therefore said to the monk Elephant Protector, "Because of watching your elephant, many people are not able to be secluded, you should quickly abandon it." Elephant Protector reported, "I have wanted to abandon it from the beginning, but I have not been able to do so." The Blessed One said, "Say to the elephant three times: 'I have exhausted birth, I do not need you from now on.' Then it will disappear." Elephant Protector also said 'I do not need you' to the elephant three times as the Blessed One had said, and the golden elephant sank into the ground. The monks were amazed and reported to the Blessed One, "What kind of field of merit did this monk Elephant Protector plant in the past, and what kind of roots of virtue did he cultivate, that he has such a mature result?" The Blessed One said to Ananda and the monks, "Any ordinary person, in the field of merit of the Three Jewels, even if they plant a little seed of virtue, will obtain immeasurable results." In the past, when the Buddha Light Protector appeared in the world, people's lives were twenty thousand years long. After that Buddha benefited sentient beings, many tall stupas were built after his Nirvana. At that time, in one of the stupas, the first Bodhisattva descended from the Tushita heaven and entered his mother's womb.
