Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Chapter of Vashistha. Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Chapter of Vashistha. Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling on Vulture Peak Mountain in Rajagriha. At that time, in that country, there was a householder named Shiri Tsi, who was extremely wealthy and prosperous, possessing a treasury filled with the seven precious jewels. He took a wife from the same lineage. Later, the wife became pregnant. After the months were complete, she gave birth to a beautiful and handsome boy, unparalleled in the world. The parents were very fond of him and summoned a soothsayer to examine him. The soothsayer said, "This child possesses the marks of merit, and the family will prosper because of him." The child's parents were overjoyed and said to the soothsayer, "Please give my son a name." The soothsayer asked, "Since this child was born, what signs or miracles have occurred?" They replied, "Nothing special, except that the child's mother, who was previously not good at speaking, has become eloquent since the child's birth." So, the child was named Vashistha. He was raised and grew up, his mind matured, and he became skilled in the arts. Later, while playing with a group of child friends, he saw a daughter from a low-class family who was very beautiful. He developed affection for her and wanted to marry her. He returned home and said to his parents, "Take that girl as my wife." The parents said, "We are of a noble lineage, and that girl is of a low and inferior lineage. How can we take her as a wife?" The child was very unhappy and said these words to his parents: "Do not consider lineage; I like that girl. Please take her as my wife! If you do not take her, I will die." The parents could not refuse their son, so they sent someone to propose marriage. The girl's parents said, "You are of a noble lineage, and we are of a low and inferior lineage, not a suitable match. Why are you proposing marriage?" However, that child was very fond of that girl. Again, they sent someone to propose marriage, and the girl's parents said this: "If he can be my soldier and is proficient in various martial arts

说：“如果他精通歌舞和游戏，并且知道国王喜欢什么，就和他结亲。”说完，那个年轻人因为学习音乐等技艺感到羞耻，但他还是努力学习，没过多久就全部学会了。在另一个时候，国王举行音乐会，聚集了所有技艺高超的人，进行爬树、跳跃和爬绳等各种游戏。一位居士的儿子也来到这里，爬上绳子，在绳子上奔跑和攀爬。国王因为分心没有看到他，就命令他努力表演。年轻人疲惫地攀爬着绳子，当他到达绳子中间时，从绳子上掉了下来，非常害怕，喊道：“我没有庇护了！”那时，善护之子来到那里，在他掉到地上之前接住了他，说道：“你现在是身体和生命没有消失而出家呢？还是掉到地上娶那个女孩为妻呢？”年轻人回答说：“如果生命没有消失，我就不想娶妻。”善护就在天空中变出一个与地面一样的地面，让他安全地站在上面。那个年轻人不再害怕，安全地站在地上，非常高兴。他跟着善护去了世尊所在的地方。到达那里后，他用头顶礼世尊的脚，并向佛陀供养。世尊为他详细地讲述了布施的道理、戒律的道理、升到天界的道理、欲望的不净，以及出家是快乐的道理，使他心生欢喜，获得了初果。然后，他请求世尊允许他出家并学习神圣的佛法。世尊答应了他，他的头发和胡须自然脱落，成为了比丘。他努力修行比丘的戒律，所有的烦恼都止息了，成为了阿罗汉。之后，具寿阿难陀向世尊请教道：“这位比丘与那个女孩，前世有什么样的因缘，以至于到了生死关头还彼此爱恋？善护之子种下了什么样的善根，以至于救了他的性命？又是什么样的因缘，使他最终成为了阿罗汉？请您开示。”世尊告诉阿难陀：‘过去……’

He said, "If he knows all kinds of songs, dances, and games, and knows what the king likes, then we will make him a relative." Having said this, the boy, ashamed to learn music and other skills, studied diligently and learned everything in a short time. At another time, the king held a concert, gathering all the skilled people, and engaged in various games such as climbing trees, jumping, and climbing ropes. A householder's son also came there and climbed onto the rope, running and climbing on the rope. The king, distracted and not seeing him, ordered him to perform diligently. The young man, tired, climbed the rope, and when he reached the middle of the rope, he fell from the rope, very frightened, and cried out, "I have no refuge!" At that time, the son of Sadāpāla came there and caught him before he fell to the ground, saying, "Do you now, with your body and life not lost, renounce the world? Or will you fall to the ground and take the girl as your wife?" The young man replied, "If life is not lost, I do not want to marry." Sadāpāla then conjured up a ground in the sky equal to the earth and placed him safely on it. The young man became fearless and stood safely on the ground, very happy. He followed Sadāpāla to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived there, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and made offerings to the Buddha. The Blessed One then extensively taught him about the benefits of generosity, the benefits of moral discipline, the benefits of being born in the heavens, the impurity of desires, and the happiness of renunciation, causing his mind to be completely liberated and attain the first fruit. Then, he requested the Blessed One to allow him to renounce the world and learn the sacred Dharma. The Blessed One granted his request, and his hair and beard fell off naturally, and he became a monk. He diligently practiced the precepts of a monk, and all defilements were exhausted, and he became an Arhat. Then, the venerable Ānanda asked the Blessed One, "What kind of karmic connection did this monk have with that girl in the past, that they were attached to each other even to the point of life and death? What kind of roots of virtue did the son of Sadāpāla plant, that he saved his life? And what was the cause that ultimately led him to become an Arhat? Please explain." The Blessed One told Ānanda, 'In the past...'
