Chapter Thirty-Seven: The Chapter of the Joyful Serving Girl Chapter Thirty-Seven: The Chapter of the Joyful Serving Girl Volume Eleven: Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park. At that time, in that country, there was a woman named Nandā, who was poor and depended on begging for a living. That woman saw the king, ministers, and many people making offerings to the Buddha and the Sangha, and she thought to herself: "What sins have I committed in the past that I am born so poor and into a lowly family? Now that I have encountered a field of merit, I have no seeds." She was very discouraged and felt regret. One day, she begged all day and only obtained one copper coin. She took that one copper coin and went to the house of a ghee seller to buy some ghee. The owner of the ghee shop said, "Buying ghee with one copper coin is too little. What are you going to do?" Nandā told him the truth. The owner of the ghee shop was compassionate and gave her extra ghee. Nandā obtained the ghee and was very happy. She went to the monastery and offered it to the Blessed One. She lit an oil lamp before the Buddha and made this aspiration: "I am poor now, and I offer this small oil lamp to the Buddha. By this merit, may I possess the lamp of wisdom in the future and dispel the darkness and defilements of all sentient beings." After making this aspiration, she returned to her dwelling. That night, the other oil lamps went out, but Nandā's lamp alone burned until dawn. At that time, it was Dagalya's turn to keep time. When dawn came, he went to collect the ghee containers and saw that only one oil lamp was particularly bright. The ghee and wick had not diminished and looked as if they had just been lit. He thought to himself, "Lighting a lamp during the day is useless, I should put it out." He tried to extinguish it with his hand, but it would not go out. Then he tried to extinguish it with a rag, but it would not go out and did not diminish. Then he tried to extinguish it with his robe, but it would not go out. The Blessed One saw this,

Then Dagala said this: 'Although you intend to extinguish this lamp, you cannot extinguish it. Nor can you, a Shravaka, move or shake it. Even if you were to blow on a pool formed by the waters of the four great oceans with a hurricane, it would not be extinguished. Therefore, this lamp is offered with a great mind, intending to bring great benefit to all beings.' After the Blessed One spoke these words, Snyen Gamo also came before the Blessed One, bowed her head at his feet. At that time, the Blessed One prophesied: 'In the future, after two kalpas have passed, you will attain perfect enlightenment, and your name will be Lamp Light, endowed with the ten powers.' At that time, Snyen Gamo, having heard the prophecy of the Blessed One, rejoiced greatly, knelt on both knees, and requested to be ordained. The Blessed One also granted her ordination. The venerable Ananda and the son of Dagala, having seen the poor woman receive the prophecy and be ordained, knelt on both knees, joined their palms, and said to the Blessed One: 'What deeds did this Snyen Gamo commit in the past, that she is so poor and unable to make a living? And what did she do to meet the Blessed One and make offerings to the fourfold assembly?' The Blessed One said to Ananda: 'In the past, the Buddha Light Protector descended into the world. At that time, the wife of a householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks. Prior to that, a poor woman had invited him and he had granted her request to go. That poor woman was also a non-returning Bodhisattva. At that time, the wife of the householder, relying on her power and wealth, and her noble birth, scorned and ridiculed the poor woman's previous invitation, saying: 'Why did the Blessed One not go to the place I invited him to first, but instead went to the place invited by a beggar?' She spoke evil words and scorned the noble one, and therefore, for five hundred lifetimes, she was poor and destitute, born into a lineage that relied on begging for a living.'

With devotion to the land and the Sangha, they offered with joy, and now having met the Buddha, they were ordained and received predictions. At that time, the many retinues were overjoyed by the Buddha's teachings. Then, the king, ministers, and many people, having heard that a poor woman was predicted to become a Buddha because she had offered a lamp to the Buddha, all showed her respect and fully prepared four kinds of excellent offerings to present to her. At that time, all the boys and girls of that land, both virtuous and base, prepared fragrant lamps and offered them to the Bhagavan in the garden of Prince Jeta. The many people who offered lamps completely filled the garden of Prince Jeta with lamps, offering them from all four directions, like stars shining in the night sky, offering day and night without ceasing, for seven days. At that time, Ananda was very happy and amazed, praising, "The Bhagavan has so many qualities!" Then, he said to the Bhagavan, "What kind of deeds did the Bhagavan do in the past to have such immeasurable lamps?" The Bhagavan said to Ananda, "In the past, in this Jambudvipa, there was a king named Pasili who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms. The king's queen had a son whose body color was like gold, possessing the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks, and on his head was a bright, dazzling jewel. They summoned a fortune-teller to examine the good and bad omens and to give him a name. When the fortune-teller looked, he was amazed by the marks and raised his hand, saying, 'Very good!' This prince is unparalleled in the world, among gods and humans. If he remains at home, he will become a Chakravartin king. If he goes forth, he will attain enlightenment.' The fortune-teller said to the king, 'What wonderful and amazing signs appeared when the prince was first born?' The king replied, 'When the prince was born, there was a very bright jewel on his head.'
