Chapter Thirty-Four: Taming the Householders Chapter Thirty-Four: Taming the Householders Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, at Anathapindika's monastery, together with a great community of monks, thirteen hundred and fifty in all. At that time, in that country, there were five hundred beggars who always relied on the Buddha and the Sangha for their livelihood. Later, those beggars thought to themselves: Now we should go forth into the Buddha's teachings. Then they arrived where the Buddha was, and said to the Blessed One: We live by the compassion of the Buddha and the Sangha, and we ask to go forth. Then the Blessed One said to them: The Dharma I teach is completely pure, without distinction of noble or base, rich or poor. Just as water is able to wash away all distinctions of noble or base, rich or poor, good or bad. If washed with water, there is nothing that is not clean. Just as fire is able to burn anything, whether large or small, between mountains, rocks, and the sky and earth. Furthermore, my Dharma is like the sky, it can accommodate anyone, whether male or female, young or old, rich or poor. You are allowed to practice as you wish. When the five hundred beggars heard this, they were delighted and rejoiced, and especially requested to go forth to the Buddha. The Blessed One said: Welcome. As soon as he spoke, their hair and beards fell off naturally, and they became monks wearing robes, and were fully ordained. The Blessed One taught them the Dharma, and their bodies and minds were completely liberated, their defilements were exhausted, and they became Arhats. At that time, the householders and wealthy merchants living in that country, hearing that those lowly beggars had been converted and ordained by the Buddha, scorned and ridiculed them, saying: If we invite the Blessed One and the noble Sangha, and perform meritorious deeds, how can we allow those converted lowly beggars to sit on seats and have food served in vessels? At that time, the prince

King Jeta invited the Buddha and the Sangha for a meal. He then said to the Blessed One, 'I have invited the Buddha and the Sangha, but not the newly joined ascetics.' The next day, when it was time for the meal, the Buddha and the Sangha went as invited. To the ascetics who had not been invited, he said, 'You who have not been invited by the patron, go to Uttarakuru and enjoy the rice that grows without being sown or cultivated. What are you doing coming to the patron's house?' Those monks, as instructed, went to Uttarakuru by the miraculous power of the Arhats, filled their bowls with rice, and with graceful demeanor, like a king of swans, descended from the sky to the house of Prince Jeta. They sat down in order and ate the rice. At that time, Prince Jeta saw those monks coming from the sky by miraculous power with graceful demeanor. He was overjoyed and amazed, and he said to the Blessed One, 'From what direction do these noble ones, who are so glorious and virtuous, arrive with such graceful demeanor?' The Blessed One said to Prince Jeta, 'If you wish to know these things, listen carefully, and I will tell you. These monks are the monks who were not invited by the prince. Because they were not invited, they each took rice from Uttarakuru and ate it.' Then, Prince Jeta, having heard these words, was very ashamed and regretted it. He said, 'I am truly ignorant, for I did not recognize the noble ones.' Then he said to the Blessed One, 'The virtues of the Blessed One are inconceivable. These beggars are of very low and wretched caste in this land, but now they have obtained happiness in this world and have also found long-term benefit. The Blessed One came into the world for these things alone!' Furthermore, Blessed One, what roots of virtue did these beggars protect in their past lives, and what meritorious deeds did they diligently perform?
