Chapter Thirty-one, entitled King Mirror Face. Chapter Thirty-one, entitled King Mirror Face. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove (གྲོ་འི་ཚལ་) in Rajagriha (རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཁབ་). At that time, the Blessed One was surrounded by Brahma and Indra, and others. Many in the assembly were amazed by the Blessed One's marks and signs, and his body like the color of gold, and praised him. Thus, the Blessed One surpassed all the assembly, becoming the most excellent and chief of all. The monks were in doubt and asked the Blessed One. The Blessed One replied, "It is not only now that I surpass all the assembly and become the most excellent and chief. In the past, I was also the most excellent and chief of all." Then the monks requested the Blessed One to show how he had been the chief in the past. The Blessed One then spoke as follows: "In the past, countless, immeasurable, and inconceivable eons ago, in this Jambudvipa, there was a great king who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms. He had five hundred sons. Later, a great queen gave birth to a son who had golden skin, hair as dark blue as the sky, marks of a thousand-spoked wheel on the palms of his hands, a horse image on the sole of his left foot, an elephant image on the sole of his right foot, and was born with merit. He was named King Mirror Face (མེ་ལོང་གདོང་). The great king was afflicted with illness and was nearing the end of his life. The ministers asked, 'Among these princes, who should be installed as the heir to the throne? To whom should the kingdom be entrusted?' The king instructed, 'If my son possesses these ten qualities and signs, let him be king and grant him the kingdom.' What are these ten? They are: the color of the body is like gold, and the hair is dark blue; both palms have the marks of a wheel; the sole of the right foot has the image of an elephant; the sole of the left foot has the image of a horse; when wearing the king's clothes, the clothes fit the body and are neither too big nor too small; when sitting on the king's throne

The consorts and palace maids will also be delighted with him and prostrate before him. If he is taken to the shrines of the gods, the gods will in turn prostrate before him. Through the power of his merits and virtues, he will cause a rain of the seven precious things, satisfying everyone. Moreover, he must be born of the great queen and possess these ten qualities, then it is proclaimed that he can be enthroned as king. Then, impermanence becomes manifest, and his life passes away. After that, the princes and ministers gather together to examine which of the princes possesses the ten ultimate qualities. It turns out that none of the other princes have bodies of golden color, hair that is dark blue, the mark of a wheel on the palms of their hands, or the images of elephants and horses on the soles of their feet. They are not suited to the king's garments, and if placed on the king's throne, they stand up as if frightened. The petty kings and ministers do not treat them with respect or prostrate before them, and the consorts and palace maids are not delighted or prostrate before them. If taken to the shrines, the gods do not prostrate before them. They are not capable of causing a rain of jewels, nor are they sons of the great queen. None of the five hundred princes possess even one of these characteristics. Only the youngest of the princes has a body of golden color, hair like the color of dark blue, and both hands possess the mark of a wheel. On the soles of both feet are the images of elephants and horses. He is suited to the garments and his body. If placed on the king's throne, he is radiant and greatly blessed. All the petty kings treat him with respect and prostrate before him, and the consorts and palace maids also prostrate before him with joy.
