Chapter Eighteen: The Chapter of the Poor Woman Offering Cloth. Chapter Eighteen: The Chapter of the Poor Woman Offering Cloth. At that time, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Garden of Anathapindika, teaching the Dharma to the Sangha of monks and residing there. At that time, in that country, a householder's wife gave birth to a daughter. This daughter, like other excellent daughters, was beautiful, pleasing to the eye, and lovely. From the moment she was born, she was born wrapped in soft white cloth. Her parents were amazed by this, and they showed her to a fortune-teller. After examining her, the fortune-teller determined that she possessed great merit, and so they named her White Girl. As much as the White Girl grew, the cloth also grew to the size of her body. When the girl grew up, many people from the village asked for her hand in marriage. Her parents also thought to prepare ornaments for their daughter's wedding, so they hired a blacksmith and prepared gold and silver. When the daughter saw the gold and silver being prepared, she asked her parents, "What are you doing?" Her parents replied, "These are the ornaments being prepared for your wedding." The daughter said, "I am devoted to ordination, and I do not like to be married." Her parents complied with their daughter's wishes and immediately took out the cloth, preparing to sew Dharma robes. The daughter asked, "What are you doing with this cloth?" Her parents said, "We are sewing Dharma robes for you." The daughter said, "I already have Dharma robes to wear, so there is no need to sew them. Please take me to where the Blessed One resides." Her parents agreed and took her to the presence of the Blessed One. When they arrived at the place where the Buddha was, the daughter bowed to the Blessed One with her head and requested ordination. The Blessed One replied, "Welcome!" Immediately, her hair and beard fell out on their own, and the white cloth she was wearing turned into five lower Dharma robes, which were entrusted to the mother of the Sangha of nuns (i.e., Mahaprajapati Gautami). That Bhikshuni practiced diligently, and before long, she attained the state of Arhat. Ananda then reported to the Blessed One, "What merit did the Bhikshuni White Girl accumulate in the past that she was born into a householder's family, and also possessed cloth on her body, and ultimately ordained and"

Before long, he became an Arhat. The Blessed One told Ananda: In the past, a Buddha named "Blessing Protector" descended into the world. Accompanied by his attendants, he traveled everywhere for the benefit of sentient beings, and all the local residents made extensive offerings to him. At that time, a certain monk, for the benefit of many travelers, urged all the local residents to listen to the Dharma and practice generosity towards the Buddha. At that time, there was a woman named Ke, who was extremely poor. She and her husband had only one piece of coarse cloth for clothing. When the husband went out to earn a living, the husband wore the coarse cloth, and the wife sat naked in the grass. When the wife went out to earn a living, the wife wore the coarse cloth, and the husband sat naked in the haystack. Later, that monk who worked for the benefit of all came to her door, met that woman, and said: Go and pay homage to the Buddha! Offer something! He praised the merits of generosity. He explained the ripening of stinginess, and extensively spoke of the difficulty of the Buddha appearing in the world, the difficulty of hearing the Dharma, and the rarity of obtaining a human body, urging her to go and listen to the Dharma. That woman said: Venerable, wait a moment! I will return soon. Having said that, she went into the house and said these words to her husband: There is a monk at the door urging you to go and pay homage to the Buddha! Listen to the Dharma, practice generosity! We did not practice generosity in our previous life, so we have become so poor. If we do not accumulate provisions for the next life now, what will become of us? The husband said: If you say we should give, we are so poor and have nothing, what shall we give? The wife said: We became so poor because we did not practice generosity in our previous life. If we do not practice generosity now, where will we go in the next life? I must practice generosity, do not regret it! The husband thought: She must have some valuable things hidden, let her give them away! The wife said: I am happy to give away this coarse cloth. The husband said: We husband and wife only have this coarse cloth, we rely on it to earn a living. If we give it away now, what will become of both of us? The wife said: A person is bound to die.
