At that time, the Blessed One's body was afflicted by a cold ailment, and the physician Jivaka mixed thirty-two kinds of medicine with ghee, and administered thirty-two ounces of medicine each day. Devadatta, the wicked one, generated a mind of jealousy, proclaiming himself equal to the Buddha. Hearing that the Blessed One was taking medicine, he desired medicine, and in order to be like the Buddha, he pleaded with the physician Jivaka, asking him to prepare and give him the same medicine that the Blessed One was taking. Then Jivaka prepared the medicine and gave it to Devadatta, who ordered that four ounces of medicine be given to him each day. Devadatta asked Jivaka, "How many ounces of medicine does the Blessed One take each day?" Jivaka said, "The Blessed One now takes thirty-two ounces of medicine each day." Devadatta ordered that thirty-two ounces of medicine be given to him each day as well. Jivaka said, "Your body is not the same as the Thus-Gone One's. If you eat too much, you will not be able to digest it, and instead of dispelling illness, it will turn into illness." Devadatta said, "I have the heat to digest however much I eat. What difference is there between me and the Buddha?" So he took thirty-two ounces of medicine in one day, like the Buddha, but the medicine did not digest, and it blocked all the veins, causing him great distress. He cried out in extreme pain. The Blessed One, thinking of him with compassion, stretched out his hand from afar and touched Devadatta's head, and immediately all the medicine was digested, and he was freed from the suffering of illness. Devadatta knew that it was the Blessed One's hand, and he said, "Prince Siddhartha also learned medicine with the power of wisdom, like a skilled physician. I do not like this." At that time, Ananda heard him say this and was very displeased, and knelt on the ground.
