I thought that in order to have my body reborn elsewhere, I would commit suicide, so I jumped off a high cliff, and also jumped into the water, and also sought poison, but I could not die. I thought that if I did something that violated the king's law, I would die, but even those who are executed by the king do not die like this. Now that it has become like this, please, O king, have mercy and allow me to be ordained." The king also promised, "I allow you to be ordained." After that, King Ajatashatru said to the Blessed One, "O Blessed One, what good roots did this young boy cultivate in the past that he did not die when he jumped off a cliff, nor was he harmed when he jumped into the water, nor did he die when he sought poison, nor was he injured when he was shot with an arrow? In the immeasurable past, in a place called Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-datta. The king, along with his queen and palace maids, went to enjoy themselves in a garden. In that garden, the palace maids were singing, and the king heard someone outside the garden walls loudly blowing a conch shell. Upon hearing this, the king became very angry and ordered that the person be seized and executed. At that time, a minister came in from outside and saw someone being imprisoned. He asked the servants, "What crime has this person committed to be imprisoned?" They explained in detail why the person was being held. The minister said to them, "Wait, do not kill him yet, I will inform the king." Then he went into the palace and said to the king: "The person being led to execution has not done anything deserving of death. Singing or blowing a conch shell is invisible, and one should not be quick to anger because of it, let alone disrespect the queen. Please have mercy on his life and release him." The king also ordered not to kill him, and to let him go. That person then became a servant of the minister. Many years later, he thought to himself, "The harm of desire is sharper than a sword, and my distress is also because of desire." So he requested the minister, "Please allow me to renounce and practice the path of liberation." The minister also said, "If you want to practice the path of liberation, I will not hinder you. May you become liberated and then come back to see me again." After that, the person went to a secluded place, kept the true meaning in mind, and diligently practiced, eventually becoming a Pratyekabuddha (Solitary Buddha). Then he returned to the city and came to the place where the great minister was. The great minister was very happy and offered him alms and the four necessities of life without hesitation. Then, that Pratyekabuddha rose into the sky above, water flowed from his body, fire appeared, and he emitted great rays of light, displaying eighteen kinds of miracles. Wherever I am born, may I be powerful and wealthy, long-lived, and may I be exceedingly superior to others by a hundredfold or a thousandfold. May my wisdom and merit be equal to this person.' Thus he made a prayer. The Blessed One said to the king: 'At that time, at that moment, that minister saved the life of a person, and the one who obtained the result is this person. By that cause, by that condition, wherever he was born, it did not become an obstacle to his life. Now, having met me, he has obtained the supreme result.'
